“Older drivers have shared their experiences with me and with Kerry County Council in recent times, though meetings with Age Friendly Kerry and the Older Peoples Council, and they have described some of what they encounter on the road as older drivers,” said Declan Keogh.
“Some have recalled aggression, tailgating, and being placed under pressure to ‘move on’, while others had questions regarding losing their licence if it expires and what the requirements were on eyesight and medical tests for driving licences. This was the starting point for the older drivers’ conference.
“It is important that every motorist is allowed to drive in a safe and appropriate manner, despite their age. It is also just as important that drivers continue to drive in an independent and comfortable manner, in the knowledge that they are a competent driver. The conference aims to promote the positive, independent experience of driving for longer.”

David Moriarty reports on Kerry’s game against Finn Harps last night in Tralee…
KERRY FC 1-1 FINN HARPS
Kerry FC returned to Mounthawk Park in League of Ireland action for the first time since a tough 4-1 loss to Cork City two weeks ago. Kerry FC have faced a tough few weeks in the League of Ireland with just five points in their last eleven league games.
Harps on the other hand are giving themselves a great chance at finishing in the promotion places with ten points out of a possible twelve, most recently drawing 2-2 away to Cork City last week in Turners Cross.
A win in Tralee would put themselves in the conversation for a promotion place with just three games remaining.

First Team Head Coach Conor McCarthy would be without Ryan Kelliher for the game on Friday as he picked up a slight injury in the game away to Bray Wanderers last Friday
Although the results on the pitch haven’t been the best, there was great news for the club on Wednesday as Kerry FC received funding of €387,983 from the community sport fund. This will further escalate Mounthawk Park for supporters and players in the coming future.
The first half was a very cagey affair with neither side really getting many opportunities to get themselves ahead. Kerry FC had an attempt early on with a ball being whipped into the area by Kennedy Amechi towards Cian Brosnan but seventeen year old goalkeeper Oisin Cooney was well out to claim it.
Success Edugon had the first chance on goal for Finn Harps by getting past Sean O’Connell on the right wing and getting his shot off with his left foot. It was looking like it was on target but rose in the end and went over the crossbar clear of any danger for the Kerry FC defence.
Kennedy Amechi was in the action once again and had possibly Kerry FC’s best chance of the first half when he got into the area and had a shot with his right foot low and hard into the side netting. It was much better from Kerry FC compared to previous games in an attacking sense.
Kerry FC were fantastic in nullifying any Finn Harps attacking attempt with the midfield working tirelessly in getting the ball back. Kerry turned over the ball numerous times from Finn Harps attacks and the work off the ball was exceptional throughout. Half an hour in, Ethan Kos headed over the crossbar from a corner and the home side were getting closer and closer to taking the lead.
Cian Brosnan got a shot away in space just inside the box nine minutes before the final whistle of the first forty five minutes but with little power Cooney gathered it easily. Kerry FC put in a great first half performance and all they were lacking was a goal. It was important that Kerry FC started the second half the same way they finished the first because a drop in performance would be easily punished by Finn Harps target man Success Edugon and the pace he possesses.
Kennedy Amechi came close again eleven minutes into the second half. He put a great ball into the six yard box but unfortunately there was nobody there to get on the end of it.
Oran Crowe leaped high to get on the end of a Cian Brosnan cross and it was cleared off the line by the Harps defence and nearly put into their own net. It eventually came to nothing. As the game wore on it felt like it would be another night for Kerry FC in front of goal as they could not get one over the line, figuratively and literally.
Nine minutes after that golden opportunity for Crowe, completely against the run of play, Finn Harps would take the lead. Good work between Success Edugon and Sean Patton opened up a pass for Patrick Ferry who took the shot on first time on the edge of the box and he slotted it into the bottom left corner past Antonio Tuta. A golden goal in the stage of the game by Harps who were far from their best on the evening.
Eleven minutes later Kerry FC would equalise through Sean McGrath who bagged his tenth goal in a Kerry FC jersey. Brilliant work once again from Nathan Gleeson on that left wing opened an opportunity for himself who toe-poked a shot at goal. Cooney did very well to get down to it but McGrath was there to tap in the rebound and get the home side level.
In the first minute of additional time Oran Crowe had an unbelievable opportunity to win it but his shot was equalled by Cooney who prevented his side from falling to a double blow in the late stages. It ended in a draw and Kerry FC showed positive signs as they head into the final three games of the season. They travel to Cobh Ramblers next Friday in their penultimate away game of the league season and look to improve even further on their performance from Friday night. The draw brings Kerry FC back to ninth on the table, ahead of Longford on goal difference

Our movie guy, James Finnegan, looks at some films on TV today for your viewing pleasure…
Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Saturday 3.35pm RTE1) is a romantic comedy directed by Blake Edwards and based on the Truman Capote novella of the same name.
Holly Golighty (Audrey Hepburn) is a naive, eccentric socialite with a complicated past who meets Paul Varjak (George Peppard) a struggling writer, who moves into her apartment building.
It is perhaps best remembered for the Academy Award winning score and original song “Moon River” by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer.

In Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle(Saturday 7.00pm RTE1), four teenagers get transported and transformed into video game avatars. They now are a party of jungle explorers, who discover that they have to work together and complete a quest in order to escape the game and return to reality.
Nothing runs smoothly and fascinating discoveries make for a very entertaining family Saturday night film starring Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan.
The fierce rivalry between Formula One drivers James Hunt (played by Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl)is the backdrop to Rush(Saturday 9.30pm RTE2).
Continued below…
Directed by Ron Howard and written by Peter Morgan, and a typically energetic score by Hans Zimmer, the clash of personalities and styles, particularly during the 1976 Grand Prix Series, is brought across very well, although both drivers were actually good friends, which I can attest to personally.
This is one of the superior sporting biographical films and the performances of the two main leads are particularly good. Well worth a watch.
Antoine Fuqua’s effective remake of the 1980’s television series stars Denzel Washington in the Edward Woodward role, Robert McCall, in The Equalizer(Saturday 9.45pm RTE One)
With a violent past as a secret agent behind him, McCall leads a quiet life. However, when he comes across a young girl, Teri (Chloe Grace Moretz) being controlled by vicious gangsters, he once again uses his unique talents to fight for justice, if not always following an approved legal path.
The End of the Tour(Saturday 9.50pm TG4) tells the tale of the five day interview between Rolling Stones reporter David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) and the writer David Foster Wallace following the publication of his breakout novel “infinite Jest”, and who took his own life in 2008
Jason Segal takes the role of Wallace, which he delivers a rather affecting performance that could so easily have gone down the tortured genius route. However an excellent script by screenwriter Donald Margulies and sensitive direction by James Ponsoldt covers a whole series of related creative topics.
When a beautiful woman is found murdered, a team of Los Angeles detectives investigate the crime in Mulholland Drive(Saturday 11.40pm RTE2). There is no shortage of suspects as the victim had several powerful lovers, all with secrets to hide, including married lead detective Max Hoover (Nick Nolte).
Directed by Lee Tamahori, this has a classic ensemble cast including Jennifer Connelly, Melanie Griffin, Michael Madsen, Chris Penn, Andrew McCarthy and John Malkovich. Enjoy!

Ciara O’Gorman, Development Manager with South Munster Citizens Information Service looks at Domiciliary Care Allowance (DCA) which is a monthly payment for a child aged under 16 with a severe disability.
“The first thing to note is that Domiciliary Care Allowance is not means-tested, so you may qualify for it regardless of your income” says Ciara. “DCA is not based on the type of disability your child has but instead, it is based on their level of physical or mental impairment. In order to meet the qualifying conditions for this payment, you need to demonstrate that your child needs ongoing care and attention, substantially over and above what is usually needed by a child of the same age.”
The Department of Social Protection (DSP) has developed guidelines in relation to this . DCA Medical Guidelines which are available online or by calling into your local CIC.
How to qualify for Domiciliary Care Allowance
To get Domiciliary Care Allowance (DCA), your child must have a severe disability that is likely to last for at least a year, and:
• Be aged under 16
• Live with the person getting the DCA for at least 5 days a week (there are some exceptions to this – see ‘Living at home’ below)
• Meet the medical criteria (see below)
• Be ordinarily resident in Ireland
Also, the person getting DCA for the child must:
• Provide for the care of the child
• Be habitually resident in the State.
Medical criteria
The legislation says to get Domiciliary Care Allowance, a child must have “a severe disability requiring continual or continuous care and attention, substantially in excess of the care and attention normally required by a child of the same age”.
Ciara elaborates “This means your child’s eligibility for DCA is not based on the type of disability or illness they have, but on the level of care and attention they need as a result. They must need this care and attention for daily living and for at least 12 months.
Before deciding on whether your child meets the medical criteria, the Department’s Medical Assessor looks at the following information:
• The history of the case
• All medical reports received (your GP fills out a medical report, and you should include reports from any relevant specialists)
• Your description of the care and attention needed by your child. (The application form lets you explain what extra care your child needs under a number of headings, such as personal care; communication; behaviour; safety; and sensory issues).
Living at home
To qualify for DCA, the child must live at home with the person getting the allowance for 5 or more days a week. However, DCA may be paid where parents share the full-time care of their disabled child, but live apart. For example, where separated parents have joint custody, but the child doesn’t live with either parent for the required 5 continuous days each week.
In this case, DCA is paid to the parent who is nominated in writing by both parents, or to the parent who is getting Child Benefit for the child.
Child attends residential care
2You may get a half-rate DCA payment if your child is in residential care and goes home for 2 days or more a week. For example, a child who attends residential services from Monday to Friday and goes home at weekends. Children who are being cared for on a full-time basis in residential homes or other institutions are not eligible for DCA however” confirms Ciara.
Rate of Domiciliary Care Allowance
“The Domiciliary Care Allowance (DCA) rate is €340 per month and once in receipt of the payment, you will get it on the third Tuesday of every month for the current month. Be aware that there is no limit to the number of children for whom you can claim DCA. This means, if you are caring for more than one child who qualifies for DCA, you can get the monthly allowance for each child.”
Hospital stays
You can continue getting DCA for up to 26 weeks, in a period of 12 months, if your child is in hospital getting medical treatment (or other treatment) of a temporary nature. If your baby stays in hospital for medical treatment immediately after their birth, you can get DCA for up to 18 months while they are in hospital. This applies to babies born on or after 1 January 2023 only.
Other payments
“You can get Child Benefit with Domiciliary Care Allowance. You can also get the annual Carer’s Support Grant, which is paid automatically in June. You may qualify for Carer’s Benefit or Carer’s Allowance if you meet the criteria for these payments and remember, if you are already getting DCA, you don’t need to fill in the medical report part of the form when applying for Carer’s Allowance.
All children getting DCA can get a medical card without a means test.
How to apply for Domiciliary Care Allowance
To apply, fill in a Domiciliary Care Allowance application form (Dom Care 1). Ciara confirms “This form is available online but if you cannot download the application form, feel free to contact your local Citizens Information Centre who can give you one and even help you complete the form.
You should complete Parts 1 to 5 of the form and then your child’s GP or specialist should fill in parts 6 and 7 (the medical report) of the form. Be sure to include any reports and other information about your child’s disability, and the impact it has on their care needs.”
Optional extra medical form
If your child has a Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), you can ask the medical professional (or specialist dealing with your child) to complete an additional medical form called DomCare3.
PDD refers to disorders characterised by delays in the development of social and communication skills. It includes Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder and Rett’s Syndrome.
Ciara advises “This form is optional, because medical professionals may have already given a detailed report on your child’s medical condition and care needs. However, if you do not have a recent report from your child’s medical professional, the DomCare3 form can be useful. The completed form will explain your child’s conditions, cover any specific care needs your child might have as a result of their disability and will help the Department’s medical assessor decide on their eligibility.
Appeals
If your application is refused, you can appeal the decision to the independent Social Welfare Appeals Office. You must appeal within 21 days of getting the decision. Contact your local CIC for advice and support on how to appeal.
What happens when my child reaches 16?
DCA stops when your child reaches 16, so your last DCA payment will be for the month of their 16th birthday. The Department of Social Protection will write to you 3 months before your child’s 16th birthday to remind you that DCA will soon stop. At age 16, your child can apply in their own right for Disability Allowance.
Disability Allowance
“DA is a means-tested payment for people with disabilities who, as a result of their disability, are substantially restricted in undertaking work that would otherwise be suitable for a person of their age, experience and qualifications,” says Ciara. “The qualifying conditions for DA are different from the qualifying conditions for DCA, so your child is not automatically entitled to DA because they were getting DCA.
Your child should apply a few months before they turn 16, to allow time for their application to be processed. It is worth noting that the means test for Disability Allowance assesses the means of your child, and your income is not taken into account.

Rory was also the winner in the Senior Category while the winner in the Junior Category was Áine Newsome, a Transition Year student at Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School who won the award for her essay on Annascaul Post Office.
The Kerry Young Historian Award is an annual competition open to all Kerry secondary schools and young people from Kerry between the ages of 12 and 19 who would like to explore their local history, archaeology and heritage.
“The purpose of the award is to encourage participants to research local history topics in a personal, interesting, and critical way with a special focus on some of Kerry’s lesser known or untold stories. The award aims to encourage and produce the historians of the future as well as engaging young people in local history, archaeology and heritage,” said the President of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Association, Tony Bergin.
All the entries in the junior and senior categories were present for the announcement of the winner on Wednesday.
The winning essays in both categories will be published in the Kerry Magazine, an annual publication from the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society.
Each participating school received a voucher from Kerry County Museum for a free visit or outreach visit to the school. Prize-winning schools in the Junior and Senior categories are also presented with a complementary history workshop as part of the Architecture Kerry Festival this month.
The project runs from September to March each year and the 2025 competition is now open. Teachers and young people who would like to express their interest can contact education@kerryhistory.ie at any time for more information. Scroll down for photos…
It’s the penultimate home game of the season for Kerry FC as Donegal’s Finn Harps make the long and winding journey to the county capital tomorrow night.
Kerry come into the game in a poor run of form, most notably without a win since July and without a league win since mid-June. With just 3 draws in that space of that time,
Kerry find themselves stuck in a small bit of limbo as the season draws to a close. With a final home game against Athlone to come, which is sandwiched by away trips to Wexford and Cobh in the coming weeks, Kerry will be desperate to get some points on the board before the season draws to a close.
Continued below…
The visitors Finn Harps, on the other hand, are in a right battle for the play-off places.
Currently in 6th, the North Westerners are 3 points adrift of the coveted places with 4 games to play. Every result and point will be vital if they are to leap ahead of the likes of Bray, Wexford and Athlone ahead of them in the race.
3 wins and a draw in the last 4 games has seen them put a stop to a 6 game-losing streak and will be full of confidence ahead of their trip to the Kingdom.
Very little has separated the sides in the 7 meetings to date. In fact, Kerry’s 2-0 win over Harps earlier this season was the biggest winning margin for either side in the clubs short history. The game has produced 3 draws to date, 2 of which ended scoreless, both in Ballybofey.
Two of Kerry FC’s main men in 2024 played for the Donegal side in 2023. Winger Daniel Okwute played for Harps on loan from Stockport County for the opening months of last season and even faced his home town club Kerry twice while playing for Finn Harps before he secured a move home in July last year. Kerry’s shot-stopper Antonio Tuta also played for Finn Harps last term.
Thankfully, no fresh injury concerns have been reported by the management team ahead of this one. Everyone made it through Monday night’s Friendly fixture against the Munster FA so the management team have a full deck of cards to choose from.
Conor McCarthy said; ‘For us, it’s trying to get the best team on the pitch to win the game. Sometimes, certain games require different personnel and each game has its own story. We’ve looked at Finn Harps and there is no doubt they are a very good side. Very good physically, a direct team and there is no denying their quality in the middle of the pitch. Our team will be picked on what we think is best for us to get 3 points’.

TRALEE Community Allotments Steering Group are welcoming members of the public to join them to celebrate the Re-Launch of the Tralee Community Allotments from 3pm-4.30 p.m. on Monday September 30th at the Moyderwell Allotments on Dean’s Lane.
This relaunch event marks a significant milestone in the revitalisation of the three Tralee Community Allotments – Rahoonane, Marian Park and Moyderwell.
The event will highlight the many activities, developments and future potential of the three allotments including fruit and vegetable growing, composting, food harvesting and preservation, social activities, drama, music and more.
Continued below…
Allotment holders from across the three allotments will be available to chat about their experiences of the allotments including the calendar of activities, classes and workshop opportunities.
Mary Kiernan of Transition Kerry said; “Community Allotments are a really valuable resource with countless benefits. They are a sanctuary for health and wellbeing and wonderful for community building. They are a great nature learning space for climate adaptation, biodiversity management, local, sustainable food growing and waste and water management.”
Kerry PPN Environmental Representative Anne-Marie Fuller said; “As part of the policy development work of Kerry PPN environmental linkage group we are working on highlighting and raising awareness of the great social, health and environmental benefits of allotments. What we saw as a result of the COVID pandemic is that these types of community spaces were very difficult to maintain on volunteer effort alone. We hope to convince Kerry County Council and other local decision makers and funders of the need to provide further dedicated support for these initiatives and a programme of multi-annual funding”.
Imelda Sheehan of Marian Park allotments said; “ Everyone is welcoming and friendly and it’s been a very positive experience for me. I’m growing vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, onions, tomatoes, spinach, basil and lettuce. And cooking what I’ve grown adds something special to my recipes – with the added bonus of sharing any extra produce with my neighbours. I would encourage non-gardeners to start by sharing a ‘bed’ with a friend – as two people could easily share gardening tasks. In the Tralee Community Allotments Group we are all learning and we all help each other with planting ideas and we share advice. Even experienced gardeners continue to learn…our motto is “learn as you grow”.
You can also learn about various ways to get involved or indeed apply to use or share a bed. For more information contact allotments@newkd.ie
This celebratory event will have some music, refreshments and the opportunity to sample some of the delicious produce grown in the allotments. RSVP transitionkerry2020@gmail.com
