A FIFTY unit local authority housing development is planned for the Lohercannon area in 2017.

The plan emerged during a presentation by John Breen, Director of Services at Kerry County Council, of the targets for delivery under the Social Housing Strategy 2015, 2016 and 2017 at the monthly meeting of the authority on Monday.

It estimated the cost of delivering 1,058 housing units in the county during this period at €62m.

In the presentation, Mr Breen gave details of approved local authority construction and acquisition projects currently being progressed in the county, during 2015-17, totalling €17,509,211.

They include 30 house purchases in Tralee, Killarney and Killorglin, 23 units in the Mitchels Regeneration project and four units at Bill Kinnerk Road, among other projects around the county.

When it comes to Tralee projects, they are looking to progress in the future 12 units in the Killeen area in 2016 at an estimated cost of over €1.8m, while 50 units are proposed for Lohercannon, at an estimated cost of €9.6m. TraleeToday.ie understands the proposed development will be located at a field behind the Ashgrove estate.

Mr Breen said there are issues with planning and zoning to be looked at with the Lohercannon project.

They are also proposing 80 further house purchases in Killarney and Tralee spread over 2016-17.

It is also proposed that 44 units will be built in the Kingdom Voluntary Housing (14 units) and Cluid Voluntary Housing (30 units) projects at the Mitchels area in 2016, as part of the Capital Assistance Scheme at an estimated cost of over €6.1m.
