FUNDING of €1.5m has been made available for work on two projects in Tralee town centre.

The money will be used for the regeneration of the Denny Site and for work on the Square.

The funding is part of a €40m national announcement under the European Regional Development Fund and Kerry County Council will match the funding with its own resources.

Back in November it was reported that Kerry County Council submitted a detailed developmental proposal for the Denny Site in Tralee which is set to cost over €3m. It involves the demolition of the site, its interim use as an amenity area and the preparation of a master plan for its future long term development.

The submission also deals with the site’s connectivity to the town centre and the improvement of the adjoining streetscapes in conjunction with the smarter travel programme.

The proposal was submitted as its number one priority under the Designated Urban Centre Grant Scheme Southern and Eastern Operational Programme 2014-2020.

There have been a number of suggestions by councillors over the years to develop the Square, including the possibility of covering it with some sort of canopy.

The announcement of funding has been welcomed by Kerry Labour TD Arthur Spring.

“I am delighted to see progress in dealing with the derelict Denny site which was kindly gifted to the people of Tralee by Kerry Group and I look to its development as a significant civic amenity for the town which is improving with each of our government capital announcements ” Deputy Spring commented.
