STUDENTS at Presentation Secondary Tralee, have been participating in the #itsyourmove launched by Operation Transformation (OT) as part of their PE fitness programme.
OT launched a brand new dance fitness campaign #itsyourmove, designed especially for teenage girls by Hip Hop sensations, Raw Edge Crew.
Each week over the past month a new sequence was added building up to a complete routine.
This activity has really captured the imagination of the students with students being seen to dance during break-times and parents reporting that they are even practising it at home – unlike homework in other subjects perhaps!
First year students completed the full routine en masse on Friday afternoon and their performance was videoed and will be uploaded onto the Operation Transformation site (we did our own video below)..
This activity complements the recent study of Osteoporosis in conjunction with food and the Skeleton in 1st year Science.
The students were made aware that they are building their bones during their teenage years. Teenage girls need five or more servings of dairy foods a day to get the required amount of calcium and that weight-bearing exercise is essential for bone-building.
Dance is a popular activity for teenage girls and now they have the added value of bone-building that they may not have been aware of before!
With PE teacher, Alan O’Connor, getting the girls into their groups on Friday for last minute rehearsals, they were soon ready for the real thing and totally nailed it.
See video below for an excerpt from the dance and further below for photos…
