One of the consequences of our winter storms and changing weather patterns is that they often bring unintended visitors to our shores. We are familiar with marine mammal strandings in Kerry and sadly more often than not even if rescued, the animal does not survive, since it is usually sickness or weakness that brought them close to shore in the first place. Occasionally, the seas can bring stranger creatures to our beaches.

Leatherback turtles are regularly found in Irish waters; unusually for a reptile they are able to tolerate our cold Atlantic waters well, and are occasionally found stranded. Much more rarely, turtles from warmer seas are brought in by storms, and there have been a number of such creatures washed up on our coastline this winter.

The event is free to attend for members of the Irish Wildlife Trust, but they ask for a €5 donation from non-members/families.
