THE YSI Group, ‘The Road Home’, from Mercy Mounthawk, Tralee, have recently raised thousands of euro for the homeless charity, Focus Ireland, by completing a series of fundraisers.

First, the group slept outside for a night on the grounds of their school in order to understand what being homeless is like. This experiment gave the group an understanding of what it’s like have no home.

As a result, they raised €1800 through sponsorship cards and a collection held in town and Manor West Retail Park.

The group didn’t stop there and were determined to reach their goal of €2,000. To reach it, they held a car wash where Students from the YSI group spent the day washing and hoovering teacher’s cars in order to make it to their goal.

Katie Ryan, Spokesperson for ‘The Road Home’, said: “Focus Ireland is a charity which we have worked with before and hope to work with in the future. They work on the social issue that is homelessness and work toward helping people from becoming and remaining homeless. We are delighted to be donating a contribution to a charity well worth it.”

“Since making the €2,000 through the sleep out and car wash, we have been doing projects in order to keep raising awareness and making a change. Members of our group have been working on care packages for the homeless which include gloves, socks, hats, toothbrushes, toothpaste, scarves, bottles of water, deodorant, shavers, biscuits, plasters and cleaning products. Students in the school were asked to donate any of the things listed above and the response was great,” she continued.

Other members from the YSI group acted out a social experiment which involved a couple of them sitting in public areas dressed as homeless people and recording the public’s reaction. It was a very interesting experiment as some people gave money and others ignored them.

The group made a video of the experiment and uploaded it onto their Facebook page ‘The Road Home’ and Twitter page ‘@theroadhome2016′ in hope that it reaches people around Ireland and to highlight the fact that, even though a few people gave money, for every person that donated at least 100 walked past and ignored.
