On a perfect night for hurling the crowd were treated to a top class game of hurling. Abbeydorney started well getting 1-03 on the board in the opening 10 minutes with the goal coming from the youngest player on the field Sonny Ryall. Abbeydorney were resolute in defence with Peter Hinchliffe playing a captain’s role at full back ably assisted by his two teak tough corner backs Cian Lynch an Tomás Walsh.

St Brendan’s continued to press but with Kian Sheehan anchoring the defence at Centre Back, Ruairí Hannafin hurling well at wing back and Jason Brosnan bringing off some great reflex saves in the goals,  Abbeydorney continued to hold  firm.

St Brendans pressure eventually told and they finished the first half strongly leaving the half time scoreline of 3-07 to 1-06 in St Brendans favour.

7 points down playing against the breeze Abbeydorney had a mountain to climb in the second half. Jack Hannon at midfield who was a powerhouse all through drove Abbeydorney forward at the start of the second half. 2 goals from the razor sharp Darragh O’Connell breathed life into the O Dorney challenge.

Damian Hogan powered into the game in the middle of the field, Jamie Stack along with Jack Costello began making inroads in the half forward line as we went score for score with St Brendans. Sam Griffin and Conor Costello continued to defend stoutly for Abbeydorney. With 5 minutes on the clock St Brendans snatched a goal against the run of play leaving 3 points between the sides but this Abbeydorney side would not accept defeat and with one final push and Calum O Sullivan to the fore Abbeydorney hit 1-02 without reply.

2 pulsating minutes of injury time were played before the final whistle was blown. Abbeydorney held out for a famous victory for what was a great all round team effort, special mention to our 2 young substitutes Jody Charles and Luke Fitzmaurice who contributed also to a great hours hurling. St Brendans as ever were gracious in defeat.

Peter Hinchliffe accepted the Todd Nolan Trophy on behalf of a great Abbeydorney team and Jack Hannon was awarded a much-deserved Man of the Match award. A big thank you for all who supported the team on the night with a special thanks to Bill Maunsell who sponsored soft drinks and snacks for the victorious team on their return to the Abbeydorney Clubhouse.
