U21 Player of the Year  – Tomás Ó hAiniféin receiving U21 Player of the Year Award

SENIOR AWARDS NIGHT : Our Senior Club Awards night took place last Saturday night in the Clubhouse, where a very enjoyable night was had by the large crowd that attended.

The following were our worthy award recipients. Minor Player of the Year – Mikey Clifford, U21 Player of the Year – Tomás Ó hAiniféin, Intermediate Player of the Year – Brian Donovan, Senior Player of the Year – PJ Keane. Among the Special Merit Awards presented on the night were Michelle Costello, Elaine Ryall and Rachel McCarthy to acknowledge their wonderful achievement of All-Ireland glory at Inter-County and Club Level in 2019.

Kieran Dineen, Jamesie O’Connor and Niall O’Mahoney who were part of the Na Gaeil All-Ireland Junior Club Football Winning team. Mikey Clifford who captained the Kerry Minor Team to Celtic Challenge Cup Victory. Michael Slattery who was part of the U20 Kerry Hurling Team that captured the All-Ireland B Title in 2019.

The Clubperson of the Year Award was presented to the outgoing Child Welfare Officer : Peter Hinchliffe in recognition of his dedication and commitment to the club over the past number of years.

Our Hall of Fame recipient for 2019 is someone who has achieved on several sporting fronts both as a player and as a trainer. Dan Brassil  of Cahernade played for Abbeydorney at under age all through the 60s. Centre field was Dan’s position where his blistering pace was seen to best effect.

He made his senior debut for Abbeydorney in 1968  and was part of the Abbeydorney team beaten by Crotta in a County Senior semi-final, a Crotta team that went on to win the County Championship in that year. In 1969 he won a North Kerry League Title beating Ballyduff in a replayed final on a score line 6:03 v 2:04.

His crowning glory on the hurling field however was in 1974, winning a County senior medal playing midfield alongside James Behan, defeating Austin Stacks in the final on a score line 3:08 v 1:04. Hurling however was not the only sport Dan excelled at.

Minor Player of the Year – Mikey Clifford receiving his Minor Player of the Year Award from Donal Donovan, Minor Manager.

He represented Rockwell in schools rugby in the late 60s, winning Munster Schoolboy cup and was also chosen on the Munster School Boys team during this period.

He turned his hand to drama in Abbeydorney also, being a cast member in several productions in the 70s. Once Dan’s playing and acting days were over he turned all his attention to training Greyhounds for both track and coursing and has had unprecedented success.

In 2019 alone Dan had 7 dogs qualified for Clonmel Dan has swept all before him as a trainer in the coursing fields in the last 35 years. To name but a few Dan Brassil has trained winners of 2 Irish Cup, A Derby, An Oaks, 2 Champion stakes, 4 Kingdom Cups, Along with multiple Trial stakes all over the country.

When not training dogs, Dan tries to get in a couple of rounds of golf playing off a handicap of 11. Congratulations to Dan Brassil, worthy recipient of the Hall of Fame award for 2019.

INTER-COUNTY : Jamesie O’Connor, Michael O’Leary and Michael Slattery will be part of the Kerry Team that will play Antrim in the National Hurling League Final this coming weekend. The game will take place on Sunday, March 15th @ 1.00pm in Croke Park. Best of luck boys.

SENIOR CO. LEAGUE RESULT : Our Senior team played their opening game of the Senior Co. League last Friday evening in Abbeydorney against Kilgarvan winning on a scoreline of 3-20 to 5-10.

MONTHLY DRAW : The Club’s 5 Monthly Draw will commence this Month with the first draw taking place on Sunday, March 29th. Top Prizes each Month – 1st Prize : €1000, 2nd Prize : €200, 3rd Prize : €100.

FIRST AID COURSE : The Club will run a First Aid Workshop for all coaches in the Clubhouse on Tuesday, 24thMarch from 7.00pm-9.00pm.
