Activator Poles Now Available To Borrow From Tralee Library

KERRY Recreation & Sports Partnership, Kerry Library and Healthy Kerry have joined forces to provide you with a fresh and exciting physical activity opportunity.

You can now borrow a set of Activator Poles from Tralee Library. This Activator Pole Borrow Scheme will initially be piloted in the Tralee Library, with a view to being rolled out across the Library network over the coming months.

Activator Poles are an adaption of Nordic Walking poles and have been developed by Canadian Therapists to improve balance and mobility.

A full suite of support resources has been created to support you on how to use a borrowed set of Activator Poles. You can pick up a simple explanation leaflet in the Library or watch the support videos online.

Maeve Ryan of KRSP said; “Activator Pole walking is a great way to increase the workout you get in a walk, particularly for people who want to improve their balance and mobility. They can also help maintain good mental health as well as provide an opportunity for socialising”.

Niamh Doyle of Kerry Library said “Kerry Library contributes to improving the health and wellbeing of communities by providing a valuable source for health information, the provision of events and our participation in the Healthy Ireland at Your Library programme. We’re delighted to build on this service by facilitating the loan of Activator Poles through our collaboration with Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership.

Healthy County Co-Ordinator, Deirdre Hegarty said “Healthy Kerry are delighted to support this worthwhile community initiative as it gives the public more access to new and exciting ways to improve their overall health and wellbeing.  We’re keen to build on this initiative and find more ways to help the public access free resources that promote healthy lifestyles”.

To be eligible to borrow a set of activator poles you just need to be a member of Kerry Library. If you’re already a Library member, no further action is required, just pop into the Library.  Information and guidance will be provided by library staff to help you sign up.

The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr. Breandán Fitzgerald, invites people to avail of this wonderful opportunity,

To learn how to use the poles and improve your technique, you will also be able to avail of free programmes and workshops, delivered by Kerry Recreation & Sports Partnership.
