THERE won’t be a St Patrick’s Day parade Tralee or anywhere else in Kerry and nationwide, due to concerns about the Coronavirus.

It comes after parades in major cities and towns and around the country were cancelled earlier today. The Government made the order after a cabinet sub-committee meeting this afternoon.

A statement from Ken Tobin of Tralee Chamber Alliance reads: “On behalf of the organising committee for St. Patricks Festival – Tralee 2020, and acting on the advice of Kerry County Council and Government Order as already announced, we wish to confirm the St. Patricks Day Main Parade is now cancelled.

“While we are considerably disappointed to have these events deferred, we must continue to support our town and community.

In anticipation of the postponement, the committee over the past number of days have been developing a series of smaller activities for Tralee town centre which will take place instead over the coming weeks, and we are working on planned events during Easter. More details to follow.

“We wish to thank all of the committee and volunteers for their considerable time and effort to date in organising the events, in particular the many children, groups, businesses and clubs that have given so much of their time freely.”

Meanwhile, a  statement from Kerry County Council reads: “As organisers of the St Patrick’s Parade in Tralee, the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council has decided to cancel the parade in Tralee due to concerns in relation to the coronavirus.  The organising committee said that it was with regret that the event was being cancelled but that public health was paramount. The committee thanks all those who had been involved in preparations for the event.”
