THERE was anger expressed this Saturday morning as the St Vincent De Paul shop on Castle Street was forced to close for the day because of equipment left piled up outside the front of the shop and inaccessibility issues.

Footpath improvement work is taking place for the Council and when the contractor left for the weekend, they left barriers and equipment stacked up near the windows, while the shop can only be accessed by what was described as an unsteady plank.

Junior Locke of St Vincent de Paul said it was a disgrace that the front of the shop was left in such a state over the weekend.

He said an elderly gentleman had stumbled on the plank while trying to access the shop and was saved from injury by store manager Sharon Farrelly who was able to catch him.

A decision was made to close up for the day for safety reasons. He also said the shop might as well have been closed on Friday, because no-one was prepared to “walk the unsteady plank” to get in and it was inaccessible to buggies or wheelchair users.

The Council have expressed regret that the contractor left the area in such a way and have contacted them about the matter. The works are set to continue until Tuesday or Wednesday. See photos of the area below…
