ARDFERT V RATHMORE  8th August 2020

Rathmore travelled to Ardfert on Saturday night last hoping to secure one of the two qualifying places in Group 3 of the County Intermediate football championship. Both teams made 3 changes to their starting line up.

Ardfert replaced Brandon Barrett, Stephen Leen and Darren Dineen with Eoghan Courtney, Eoghan McElligott and Rhys Keane Doyle. TJ Friel, Conor Sullivan and Anthony Darmody started for Rathmore in place of Tadhg O’Mahony, Mike Joe Kelliher & Brian Moynihan.

The game was played in glorious sunshine and Rathmore opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a point from Eoin Lawlor, followed a minute later with another point from county star Paul Murphy. Ardfert replied with points from play by Bobby O’Regan and John Egan.]

Rathmore went back in front with a pointed free from Brendan O’Keeffe, quickly replied to with a point from play by David Griffin. Ardfert took the lead in the twentieth minute when John Egan, who rolled back the years, kicked his second point from play.

Rathmore came back strongly with points from George O’Keeffe, Colm Kelly and Eoin Lawlor and were unlucky not to hit the net when this shot just cleared the crossbar. Eoghan McElligott hit a point in the 23rd minute but Rathmore closed the scoring with 2 further points to leave the half time score Ardfert 0-5, Rathmore 0-8.

Rathmore opened the scoring in the second half with points from Brendan & George O’Keeffe replied to with Ardfert points from Bobby O’Regan (free)and David Griffin. Ardfert then lost midfielder Fionan Mackessy to the sin bin when he received a black card.

This allowed Rathmore to take control of the game and they moved ahead by 14pts to 8pts. Ardfert came back strongly in the final ten minutes with 2 pointed frees by David Griffin. Trevor Wallace closed the scoring when his shot for a goal went flying over the crossbar. Final score Ardfert 0-11, Rathmore 0-14.

The big surprise in this group is that Rathmore did not secure one of the qualifying places as they were many people’s favourites to progress further in the competition and even reach the county final.
