ARDFERT will get national exposure tonight when RTE’s Nationwide devotes its programme to the village and its history.

Mary Kennedy was down recently where she met local film producer, James McCarthy and his wife Catherine, who last year created the two hour film ‘Ardfert — A Historical Gem’.

Mary will be seen interviewing James and Catherine and excerpts from the film will also be screened on the half-hour show which starts at 7pm on RTE ONE.

The film itself was two years in the making and tells how the village is steeped in history, from St Brendan the navigator to Roger Casement, and much more.

In the documentary, they take you back in time and reveal some of what was discovered during the archaeological excavations carried out on Ardfert Cathedral, the ruins of which still stand proud today.  They also take you through the history of the friary, Banna Sea Rescue and discover a little more about Roger Casement.
