SENIOR FOOTBALL
Austin Stacks 0-9; Waterville 0-6.
One could use many of the sporting clichés to describe this round 10 Co. League game played at a drizzly and breezy Waterville on last Saturday evening (27th Sept). Like ‘a win is a win’, or ‘it’s good to win when you are playing poorly’ or ‘it’s good to get a bad game out of your system.’
But we did win, to maintain our unbeaten run in this season’s Co. League – so far our best League season, from a results point of view, in 35 years.
We had a brilliant start. Wayne Guthrie, who had another very good game, won the throw-in and after a patient build-up Daniel Bohan (great to see Daniel back again after his injury) punched over the opening score after 35 seconds. Still inside the 3rd minute David Mannix had slotted over another two in quick succession.
Then Waterville got going and between the 5th and 8th minutes had drawn level with three good points. Between then and half time we added another three, to two for the home side – our three coming from Shane O’Callaghan, Greg Horan and Mikey Collins – to leave us one ahead at the break (0-6 to 0-5).
Both sides had a point each within five minutes of the resumption – William Kirby on target for us. We then had to wait another 17 minutes for the next score – a brilliant long-ranged effort by Wayne Guthrie. Mikey Collins added another five minutes later for what turned out to be the last score of the game. We scored 9 points, all from play, and had 11 wides. Waterville scored 6 points, two from play, and had 10 wides.
In addition to Daniel it was also good to see John Dennis back on duty after his injury and also good to see Seán Purcell making his first appearance of the season with the Senior team.

We had already qualified for the final prior to this game but the other results of the weekend will pit us against Dr. Crokes in that final, the team we defeated in the opening round of the competition last March.
But before that it’s back to Co. Championship action this weekend with the playing of the four quarter finals. It’s a double header in both Austin Stack Park on this Saturday ( 4th Oct) and in Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday (5th). Our game, against West Kerry, is in the Stadium at 4pm, preceded at 2pm by the Mid Kerry .v. Laune Rangers game.
JUNIOR B FOOTBALL: Our B team have at least two more games to play. The Co. League Final replay against Killarney Legion is due to take place in Connolly Park but no date has been fixed as we write.
We are also involved in the Town League Final, against Na Gaeil, and no details of this has been announced yet.
BINGO: continues on this and every Saturday night commencing at 8.30pm.

CARDS: The 45 Card Sessions continue in the Clubhouse every Monday and Thursday nights at 9.30pm.
LOTTO: Last week’s (Tues 23rd) Jackpot worth €5,000 was not won. The numbers drawn were 16, 20, 28, 29.

SYMPATHY:
All in the Club, and in particular all associated with the Senior Football Squad, were sad to learn of the tragic death in a road accident of Cormac McCabe, Myshall, Carlow, brother of Club SF Mentor and Physical Fitness Coach, Ciarán. Sincere sympathy is extended to Ciarán and family on their tragic loss.
