Austin Stacks 2-13

Dingle 1-9

Our seniors qualified for their 19th Co. Championship final in total, and their third in the last five seasons, with a good solid performance in glorious summer-like sunshine at Austin Stack Park on last Sunday afternoon.

With both sides testing the waters in the opening period the first score of the game didn’t come until the 8th minute when Shane Carroll put over a free following a foul on Shane O’Callaghan. Shane Carroll added a second from play a minute later after receiving from Mikey Collins.

Dingle were back on level terms by the 12th minute with points from a free and play, but in the space of two minutes we restored our two points lead with another Shane Carroll free, after he himself was fouled, and a beauty from Mikey Collins after he intercepted a Dingle attack and ran through their defence to put over.

From the kick-out Dingle attacked and were through on goal when Darragh O’Brien made the first of a string of brilliant saves during the game. In the 19th minute Dingle pointed their 3rd when another  goal looked on. But two more points from play from Shane Carroll and David Mannix stretched our lead to three after 22 minutes of play.

Then two minutes later came the first goal of the game and our first goal in this season’s Championship. Wayne Guthrie was fouled after fielding the kick-out.

The alert David Mannix took the quick free into Kieran Donaghy who found Shane O’Callaghan and Calla burrowed the net for a great goal. In the closing five minutes of the half we added another five points – two by Star and one each by David Mannix, Mikey Collins and a Shane Carroll free – to leave us with a comfortable half time lead (1-11 to 0-3).

Dingle, as expected, did put it up to our lads in the second half, especially in the final quarter.

They started with two quick points, but a 38th minute point from a Shane Carroll free followed three minutes later by our second goal of the game – a beautiful move involving David Mannix and Shane O’Callaghan saw Shane’s cross put into the net to leave us ahead by 2-12 to 0-5 at that stage. Some said it was an own but credit has to go to Kieran Donaghy who was poised to put it in at any rate.

We seemed to ease off after that and Dingle took full advantage scoring 1-4 without reply in an eleven minute period (42nd to 53rd) – their goal coming from a penalty. And they could have come closer were it not for at least two more splendid saves from Darragh O’Brien in the 45th and 55th minutes.

The last score of the game came from a David Mannix free in the 58th minute after Star was fouled, which left us with seven points to spare at the end.
