SISTER JESSICA DOYLE: She was our oldest ex-player, being a member of a very good Camogie team  which the Club had in the late 1920s/early 30s, and we are sad to relate that she passed away peacefully last Thursday (19th Jan) in her home  in Dublin, just one month short of her 105th birthday.

She was born at No. 1 Cronin’s Terrace, Rock Street on 19th Feb, 1912 and colleagues of Jessie on that Camogie team included some great Rock names like Dolly Mulchinock, Bridie Collins and Dolly Kelter who was captain of that team.

Jessie had to give up the game when she joined the Sacred Heart Order in her early 20s after which she moved to Dublin. She was related to the late Miko Doyle and John Paul Doyle (grandfather of Hilary Donaghy – Star’s wife).

She still has many relatives living here in Tralee, who include Angela Stephenson, Joe Doyle, Madeline Kelly and Anne Lacey, and we extend sincere sympathy to all her relatives, all her colleagues in the Sacred Heart Order and all her extended family and friends.

MINOR FOOTBALL: Our Minors were due to play Na Gaeil in round 1 of the Town League on next Saturday afternoon (28th Jan) at 3.30pm but, as we write, we understand it might not go ahead as scheduled.

The remaining four rounds of the competition are as follows – R2 at home to Ballymac (4th Feb); R3 away to John Mitchels (11th Feb); R4 at home to Ardfert (25th Feb) and R5 away to Kerins O’Rahillys (St. Patrick’s Day). The top two teams in this Group of 6 will qualify for the Final (on a date to be fixed).

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Our Seniors are also due to commence their season on next Sunday afternoon (29th Jan) with an away game against Ballymac in round 1 of the Town League.

Throw in at 12.30pm. The remaining three rounds of the League are as follows – R2 at home to John Mitchels (5th Feb – a request in by Mitchels to change the date); R3 away to Kerins O’Rahillys (12th Feb); and R4 at home to Na Gaeil (19th Feb). The final is fixed for the weekend of 5th March.

McGRATH CUP FINAL: What a cracker of a game at the Gaelic Grounds yesterday (22nd Jan) where Limerick really put it up to Kerry. The Kingdom eventually came out on top (3-13 to 2-12) after the game went to extra time.

And well done again to Ronan Shanahan who had another very good game after coming off the bench.

It’s no surprise to us here in the Rock that Limerick put up such a good show as they are managed this year by Billy Lee who was a valued member of our SF Management Team last season. Good luck for the rest of the season Billy.

BEST OF LUCK: to Kenmare Shamrocks (Intermediate) and Glenbeigh/Glencar (Junior) as they both take on Mayo opposition (Westport and Louisburg respectively) in their All Ireland Club Championship semi finals in Ennis next Sunday (29th Jan).

CLUBHOUSE: As always the Clubhouse is available for all types of Parties. For Bookings, phone Maurice McNamara at 086 3747 642.

BINGO: After over 11 years of almost continuous weekly sessions it is with regret that the Club has reluctantly decided to cease our Bingo project with immediate effect. We had a cohort of very dedicated supporters who were at the Clubrooms without fail week after week but in recent times the numbers were not enough to make the effort viable.

We sincerely thank everyone who supported us during the years and also our own dedicated volunteers who were there constantly every Saturday night, people like Dan Foley, John O’Connell.  Denis O’Connor, John King, Brendan O’Regan, Tadgh McMahon, John Breen, Kevin O’Leary and Noel O’Connell; and earlier in the period people like Joe Smith, Canice Walsh, Denny Long, Ger Reidy, Paudie Commane, Pat Joe McQuinn and Harry Hynes. Our apologies to any deserving person we might have omitted which we surely have.

CARDS: The 45 Card Sessions  continue in the Clubhouse on every Monday and Thursday nights, commencing at 9.30pm each night.

LOTTO: Last week’s (16th Jan) Jackpot, worth €5,000, was not won. The numbers drawn were 2, 6, 7, 13. The €20 winners were: Mary O’Riordan, c/o John O’Riordan; Madeline Foley, c/o Carmel O’Neill; John Barrett, c/o The Club; and Margaret Lacey and Michelle Womsley, both c/o Richard Healy.

SYMPATHY: Sincere sympathy is also offered to the families of the following who died recently – Thomas Lyons, Balloonagh Estate and late of Gortacloghane, Listowel; Dermot Houlihan, Mitchel’s Court and late of Castleisland; Margaret O’Mahony (nee O’Carroll), Clogherista and late of Marian Park; Mary McElligott (nee Griffin), St. Joseph’s Estate, Spa Road and late of Mitchel’s Crescent; Anne Maria (Nancy) Trant (nee O’Donoghue), St. Brendan’s Park and late of Bay View, Kenmare; Teresa Madden (nee Casey), Cleandries, Causeway and late of Ballaghaderreen (mother of Ann-Marie Healy and mother-in-law of Terry Healy – one of the Club’s main Sponsors); Margaret Marie Sugrue, Garryruth; and Marie Magee (nee Franklin), Shanakill and late of Ballymurphy, Belfast.
