BOOK LAUNCH: Club Member and former Club Footballer (1969-84) Billy Ryle is about to publish a brilliant book entitled ‘From Fenit Bathing Slip to the High Court’.
It’s a concise history of the Tralee Swimming Club which was founded in June 1952 and in particular the problems which led to its temporary dissolution in October 2001 and the subsequent High Court case which took place exactly five years later.
It’s a brilliant read – all 112 pages – and the book is being launched by local TD, Martin Ferris at the Grand Hotel on next Monday night (8thMay) at 8pm. The book price is €10 and all net profits from sales in 2017 will be donated equally to the Fenit Youth Club and the Austin Stacks Juvenile Club – a very generous gesture by Billy for which we thank him very much.
SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-15; Kerins O’Rahillys 0-9.
After going down to the same opposition in the Town League Final just a fortnight earlier we were a little apprehensive going into this Co. Championship Relegation game played at Austin Stack Park on last Sunday evening (30th April).
But a brilliant all-round display ended in a well-deserved victory which leaves us free now to concentrate of the season ahead.
Playing against a strong wind in the first half, or playing with the wind to our backs in the second half, made little difference to our performance. It was double scores in both halves – 1-7 to 0-5 in the first and a similar feat in the second period (0-8 to 0-4).
We were ahead by 0-4 to 0-2 towards the end of the first quarter (our four points coming from four different players – Greg Horan, David Mannix (free), Darragh O’Brien and Michael O’Donnell (free) – when a defensive error was latched onto by team captain, Shane O’Callaghan and Shane netted from close range.
Three more points followed – all from play – with David Mannix, Pa McCarthy and Darragh O’Brien all on target. Two minutes before the interval Rahillys were given a life-line when they were awarded a penalty but David Hennessy made a brilliant save to preserve our five points lead at the break (1-7 to 0-5)
We continued to dominate in the second half – scoring five more points in the opening 12 minutes – four by David Mannix (3 frees) and a lovely effort from play by Jack Morgan.
Rahillys then added three in succession – all from frees, but we ended the game the stronger adding a further three to one for the opposition – David Mannix on target again with two frees and the final point of the game being the score of the game with Greg Horan putting over a beauty with the outside of his right foot.
If there was a Man of the Match Award it would be hard to overlook the display at midfield by Shane Guthrie who, along with Kieran Donaghy, dominated the centre all through.

We now turn our thoughts to the first round of the Co. Championship which commences in less than two weeks time. We have a home game against St. Kierans. The game is fixed for Saturday evening (13th May) with a 6.30pm throw-in.
CONGRATULATIONS: to William & Gráinne Kirby and to Mikey & Michelle Collins on the recent birth of two baby boys – Finn Kirby and Fiachna Collins – future Club footballers no doubt.
HURLING: We received a walk-over from Lady’s Walk in the 3rd and final round of the North Kerry IH League which was fixed for last Saturday evening (29th April). Normally the South Kerry League comes into play during the month of May but to date no fixtures have come to hand. However the North Kerry IH Championship gets underway on this Wednesday evening (3rd May) when we welcome Crotta O’Neills to Connolly Park. Throw in at 7pm..
The Co. League (Div 2A) is scheduled to start on the last day of May and continues during the four Wednesdays of June. Our five round games will be against Kenmare (h), Ballyheigue (a), O’Dorney (h), Kilgarvan (a) and Dr. Crokes (h).
B FOOTBALL: Our B team’s postponed round 1 Co. League game against Moyvane has been refixed for next Sunday (7th May). The game goes ahead in Moyvane at 2pm.
MINOR FOOTBALL: The Co. League semi finals have been fixed for Friday, 19th May at 7pm (that’s nine days after the Kerry .v. Cork clash in the Munster MF semi final which takes place in Páirc Uí Rínn on Wednesday evening week – 10th May at 7pm). We will be at home to Firies while Dingle will host Dr. Crokes in the second semi final..
U21 FOOTBALL: When referee Ciarán Branagan blew the final whistle at 6.23pm in O’Moore Park, Tullamore last Saturday evening (29thApril) he was bringing the curtain down on 54 seasons of All Ireland U21F Finals and a significant bit of tradition, which for many in the GAA in sacrosanct, was being consigned to history.
Dublin had the honour of winning the last title – their 5th title in all. Cork have the distinction of topping the Roll of Honours with 11 titles, with Kerry second on the list with 10 wins. The next in line are four teams with five titles each – Mayo (1967-2016), Galway (1972-2013), Tyrone (1991-2015) and Dublin (2003-2017).
And it was Kerry – in 1964 – who won the very first title when they defeated Laois by 1-10 to 1-3 before 10, 497 supporters in Croke Park on 13th September.
Two Rock men were on that first winning team – Henry McKinney who scored Kerry’s goal that day and Joe Joe Barrett who contributed two points. Tralee Clubs were well represented on that team with Denis O’Sullivan (Kerins O’Rahillys) lining out at centre field and John Mitchels (who at that stage had just won five Co. Championship titles in a row – 1959-1963) having five players on the team – Mick Morris, Derry O’Shea, Dom O’Donnell. Seanie Burrows and Ted Fitzgerald.
So all we can do is hope that the new venture – an U20 competition, with no Senior players allowed to participate – will be a success when it gets underway in 2018.

CARDS: The 45 Card Sessions continue in the Clubhouse on every Monday and Thursday nights, commencing at 9.30pm each night.
