Austin Stacks GAA Club News

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: to our current Club President and former Club Chairman (1986-89), Brendan Dowling, who celebrates a significant birthday this week. A nice crowd of family and friends were present in the Clubhouse on last Saturday night to mark the occasion.

We are not mentioning his age – all we will say is he was centerfield when our Minor Hurling team won the Co. Championship in September 1955 and Brendan scored one of the goals in that famous victory against Ballyheigue (9-4 to 2-2).

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-9; Dingle 0-15.

A Seán Ryan goal, in the fifth minute, gave us the ideal start in this round 7 Co. League game, played in Connolly Park on last Saturday evening (1st July).

But bit by bit the visitors edged their way back into the game and had drawn level at half time (1-5 to 0-8). Our other first half scorers were Fiachna Mangan (2), Darragh Scanlon, David Mannix and Shane O’Callaghan.

In the second half Dingle out-scored us by seven points to four – David Mannix (2 from frees), Shane O’Callaghan and Darragh Scanlon (easily the Man of the Match) our scorers in this half.

The result leaves Dingle joint second on the League table while we are still struggling, second from bottom.

Team: David Hennessy, John Murphy, Barry Walsh, Denis Costello, Darragh Scanlon (0-2), Jack O’Shea, John Morgan, Shane Carroll, Shane Guthrie, Pa McCarthy, Fiachna Mangan (0-2), Seán Ryan (1-0), David Mannix (0-3 – two frees), ,Shane O’Callaghan (Capt) (0-2), Darragh O’Brien.

Subs used: Seán Dukes (35m), Theo Diggin (59m).

SENIOR HURLING: The 5th and final round of the Co. League, at home to Dr. Crokes, is due to go ahead on this Wednesday evening (5th July) at 8pm.

B FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 0-8; Cordal 1-13.

Cordal are still the only unbeaten team in Div 5 of the Co. League after their eight points win in Connolly Park on last Saturday evening (1st July) in round 7 of the competition.

The final score really doesn’t do justice to our performance as very little separated the sides for most of the game. At half time the visitors just shaded it by a point (0-6 to 0-5) and that was still the difference between the sides with five minutes of normal time remaining, Cordal ahead by 0-9 to 0-8.

However in the closing seven minutes (two minutes of added time) we seemed to run out of steam a little while the visitors added 1-4 without replay to leave them still in second position on the League table.

Team: Barry Galvin, Colin Griffin (0-1), Paul Galvin, Brandon Patterson, Cathal O’Reilly, Dylan Harnett, Craig Corcoran, William Kirby, David Fitzmaurice, Eoghan Galvin, Seamus Bastible (0-1), Dale Counihan (Capt) (0-1), Danny Carroll (0-1), Anthony Moynihan, Paddy Fitzgibbon (0-3 – two frees and one 45).

Subs used: Andrew Morrissey (ht), Fergal Ryan (ht), Declan Clifford (35m), Seán Tansley (35m) (0-1), Cian O’Sullivan (45m), Donagh McKivergan (52m).

MINOR FOOTBALL: Our Minors are due to travel to Kenmare on this Wednesday evening (5th July) to take on Kenmare District in the first round of the Co. Championship. Throw in at 7.30pm, with extra time if required.

WELL DONE: Not alone had it been a great five days for our County Footballers, but one could say it’s been a great five years, in Munster at any rate.

On Sunday last in Fitzgerald Stadium our Minors (including our own Dylan Casey, Ciarán O’Reilly and Michael Slattery) and our Seniors (including Kieran Donaghy and Ronan Shanahan) were winning their fifth Provincial titles in a row, and five days before that our Juniors, in Páirc Uí Rínn, were winning their fourth Provincial title in a row.

Congratulations to all three squads and the best of luck for the rest of the season in the All Ireland series.

CLUBHOUSE: As always the Clubhouse is available for all types of Parties and Functions. Enquiries about Club Bookings should be made by contacting Harry Hynes at 087 2467286.
