FUN RUN: Our Senior Men’s team organised a 5K fun run/walk/Jog yesterday morning in Connolly Park.  The event was arranged to fund raise & support the Irish Power Chair team who are playing in the FIFA World Cup in Orlando.

Our Senior Team Manager, Pat Flanagan, and his son Patrick are currently representing Ireland at the games.  Sincere thanks to everyone who participated and supported the event both young and old, runners and walkers.

Special thanks to Lidl who provided refreshments and to DJ Francie Breen whose high energy tunes added greatly to the day.   A grand total of €670 was raised.  Well done everyone. See Club website for Adrienne McLoughlin’s photographs of the event.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Round 8 (of 11) of the Co, League goes ahead on this coming weekend. Our game is away to Milltown-Castlemaine on Saturday evening (15th July) at 7.30pm

B FOOTBALL: Likewise, our B team is due to travel to Valentia Island on Sunday next (16th July) for their round 8 Co. League game (of 12) against the local side. Throw in at 2pm.

In round 3 of the Town League, due to have been played on Monday evening last (10th July), we received a walk-over from Ballymac.  Our remaining three games in this League are fixed for Friday, 28th July (the postponed round 2 game at home to John Mitchels); on the following Monday (31st July) round 4 away to Kerins O’Rahillys and the 5th and final round, a week later (Monday, 7th Aug), at home to St. Pats.

SENIOR HURLING: Austin Stacks 3-10; Dr. Crokes 4-18.

The 5th and final round of the Co. League, at home to Dr. Crokes, last Wednesday (5th July) ended in victory for the visitors, despite our lads putting up a very good score and performing well throughout. The result means we will not now be involved in the semi final or final of the competition.

Fixtures have just come to hand for the Co. IH Championship. There are two round 1 games which we have avoided, so we go straight through to the quarter finals where we have a tough assignment away to Kilmoyley, fixed at the moment for Tuesday, 25thJuly at 7pm.

MINOR FOOTBALL: Kenmare District 2-14; Austin Stacks 0-18.

Our Minors trip to Kenmare on last Wednesday evening (5th July) for the first round of the Co. Championship ended in a two points win for the home side after what any neutrals in attendance must have found highly entertaining.

This high-scoring game got off to a brilliant start for us with Joseph O’Connor winning the throw-in and then putting his mid-field partner, David Fitzmaurice through for the opening point of the game after just ten seconds.

With both sides sizing each other up another eight minutes elapsed before Michael Slattery, from an acute angle, got our second point. A minute later Kenmare opened their account and were level after twelve minutes after a second one, also from play.

By the end of the first quarter we had gone two ahead again with points from Michael Slattery and Tomás Sheehy, coming up from his own defence to put over.

We had at least three good chances of goals in this half but it was Kenmare, with their first real chance, who netted after 16 minutes, adding a point as well a minute later. We then took completed control for the remainder of the half, with Joseph O’Connor and David Fitzmaurive dominating mid-field.

We added a futher six points to just one for the opposition – our scorers were Harry O’Callaghan and Donagh McKivergan with two each  and one each from Conor Lowe and the point of the game – a brilliant effort from Donagh McMahon. This left us ahead by three at the break (0-10 to 1-4).

Apart from not taking our goal chances in the first half the other factor leading to our defeat was allowing the opposition to have had such a good start to the second half. They scored 1-4 without replay within seven minutes of the resumption, exactly what it took them 30 minutes to score in the first half. This put them four clear at that stage.

But, credit to our boys, we did not give up and between then and full time we outscored the opposition by eight points to six.

As they did in the first half, both Donagh McKivergan and Michael Slattery scored two each in this period , with Ciarán O’Reilly also putting over two – one from a brilliantly-taken forty five into a strong breeze.

Two of our second half substitutes also had a point each, Podge Looney and Dean Scanlon and our third substitute, Dara Barry Walsh was also prominent during that second half.

While our lads are somewhat disappointed by the defeat all eighteen who lined-out gave their all, with superb performances also coming from Dylan Casey, Shane Walsh, Ciarán O’Reilly, Donagh McMahon, Harry O’Callaghan, Michael Slattery, Donagh McKivergan and in particular David Fitzmaurice.

Robbie Murphy, in goals, made at least two brilliant saves and couldn’t be faulted for Kenmare’s two well-taken goals. Our two corner backs, Shane Kelliher and Tomás Sheehy made many telling interventions during the game and up from, in addition to those already mentioned, Conor Lowe, Seán Quilter and Gearóid Fitzgerald were prominent in the build-ups.

Team: Robbie Murphy, Shane Kelliher, Dylan Casey, Tomás Sheehy (0-1), Shane Walsh (Capt), Ciarán O’Reilly 0-2 – one 45), Donagh McMahon (0-1), Joseph O’Connor, David Fitzmaurice (0-1), Conor Lowe (0-1), Donagh McKivergan (0-4 – two frees), Seán Quilter, Michael Slattery (0-4), Harry O’Callaghan (0-2 – one free), Gearóid Fitzgerald.

Subs used: Dara Barry Walsh (37m), Pádraig Looney (45m) (0-1), Dean Scanlon (55m) (0-1).

We now have an equally tough assignment in round 2 (losers round) of the competition when we travel to Rathmore on this Tuesday evening (11th July) to play another division side, East Kerry. Throw-in 7.30pm.
