Austin StacksSENIOR FOOTBALL: Our Seniors now have a busy three weeks ahead of them, starting on next Saturday evening (25th April) with a trip out the road to Ardfert for our first game (quarter final) in this season’s Club Championship. Throw in at 6.30pm with extra time if required.

Ardfert, the current All Ireland Intermediate Champions, are difficult to beat at any time (their brilliant comeback and eventual seven points victory after extra time in yesterday’s contest is testament to that), but on their home patch every opposition must be totally tuned in for the full 60 minutes to have any chance of coming away with a victory.
Our two games after this (on the following two weekends) are home games for us, both in the Co. League. The first is our postponed Round 1 game against Waterville (Sat/Sun, 2nd/3rd May) and then on the 10th May it’s the eagerly awaited round 4 game against Dr. Crokes which also doubles up as the 2014 Co. League Final.

ANNIVERSARY: It all began 90 years ago next Sunday. It was on that date (26th April 1925) that Kerry captured their 6th All Ireland SF title (the 1924 Championship) in Croke Park – the day when six Club Players won the first All Ireland medals that has now risen to 27 players (and 89 medals) with Kieran Donaghy’s one last September. Lining out that day (in Kerry’s 0-4 to 0-3 win over Dublin) were Joe Barrett (No. 3), Jerry Pluggy Moriarty (No. 4), Jackie Ryan (No. 10), Jimmy Baily (No. 14) and Bill Landers (No. 15), with Denis Rory O’Connell listed among the substitutes.

SF CO. LEAGUE DIV 5: Our B team’s next outing will be on the weekend of the 9th/10th May when they welcome Knocknagoshel to Connolly Park for a round 4 game in the Co. League.

MINOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-5; Dr. Crokes 1-17.
This 5th and final round of the Co. League, played on a beautiful Friday evening (17th April) in Connolly Park, did not go to plan from our point of view with Crokes having a comfortable 12 points victory.
The visitors, whose work-rate was superb, attacked in droves and defended in numbers during the 60 minutes. They opened the scoring after a minute and then two good points from Ferdia O’Brien put us in the lead by the 3rd minute. But from then until the 12th minute of the second half Crokes scored 14 unanswered points to leave them ahead by 0-15 to 0-2 at that stage (They led by 0-10 to 0-2 at half time).

We had one brief spell, half way through the second half, when we showed our through capabilities, scoring 1-3 without reply between the 44th and 48th minute. The points came from frees by Ferdia O’Brien and Michael O’Donnell and a Fergal Ryan one from play. It was fitting that the goal came from Louis Ryle as Louis was one the few who had a really good game all through. Crokes however finished strongly, scoring a further 1-2 before referee Dan Hickey (Duagh) blew the final whistle.

One positive from the game was the welcome return from injury of Michael O’Donnell who was making his first appearance of the season, coming on as a second half substitute.

Our Minors have a break now until Championship time (in early July) and in the meantime we wish all players who are doing exams in June the best of luck.
