CENTENARY MASS: Over 200 people attended the Centenary Mass at the Austin Stacks Club on last Tuesday, August 8th. The members were honoured that  Bishop Ray Browne concelebrated the Mass with Fr Pádraig Walsh, Fr Seán Hanafin, Fr Kieran O’Brien and Fr Niall Geaney. Music was provided by Martina Ryan and Lisa Curran.

There were many references on the night to the courage and vision of the founding members of the Club.

Following the Mass Bishop Ray blessed the Nun’s field. John Lynch RIP and Mick Ryan RIP were mentioned as having spearheaded the provision of a second field for the Club and prayers were said for all officers and members who continued their work through the intervening years. Tributes were paid to the Mercy Sisters, our once near neighbours, who were also so supportive of the Club down through the years. Refreshments were served to all who attended by the Connolly Park Ladies Committee ably headed by Bernie Summers. It was a great night and a fitting tribute by the Club to our Centenary Year.

Our thanks to all who helped and attended on the night and a special thanks to our Club Vice Chairperson, Máiréad Fernane who penned the above report and who was instrumental in organising and co-ordinating this very special event.

STRICTLY COME DANCING: Austin Stacks GAA present ‘Dancing Through the Decades’ in the Festival Dome on Saturday week (Aug 26th)  – and are asking all members, senior players, friends of the club, juvenile parents to please support our annual fundraiser by purchasing at least 1 ticket. Cost €20.

Even if not attending yourself please purchase and gift to a family member, neighbour or friend and play your part in making this our biggest & best Strictly yet! All funds raised will go towards the continuing development of club facilities in Connolly Park.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-9; An Ghaeltacht 3-8.

Gaeltacht kept their chances of reaching the Co. League final very much alive with this five points win in a rainy Connolly Park on yesterday afternoon (13th Aug).

On the other hand the result relegates our boys down to division 2 for the 3rd time in our Co. League history. The last two occasions we were in the second grade was in 1999-2000 and 2008-2010.

Coming up to half time in this game the sides were level on four points each with Alan Duggan and Shane O’Callaghan on target from play and two pointed frees by David Mannix. Then in the 30th minute Gaeltacht got through for the first of their three goals. We did get a point back in added time –a second from Alan Duggan – to leave the West Kerry boys ahead by two at the break (1-4 to 0-5).

Seven minutes after the resumption they had extended that lead to six points with a point from play and a goal, this time from the penalty spot.

However we worked our way back into game, and in the next ten minutes had drawn level again with a well-worked goal by team captain, Shane O’Callaghan, put through by Pa McCarthy, and points from David Mannix (free), Sean Ryan and Daniel Bohan, who was making his first appearance of the season with the Senior team.

That was as good as it got, however, for us as we managed just one more point in the final quarter – from Alan Duggan – while An Ghaeltacht went on to score three more points and a last minute goal which finally put the game beyond our reach.

Team: David Hennessy, Paul Galvin, Colin Griffin, Denis Costello, John Murphy, Jack O’Shea, Darragh Scanlon, Fiachna Mangan, Shane Guthrie, Pa McCarthy, Shane O’Callaghan (Capt) (1-1), Seán Ryan (0-1), David Mannix (0-3 free), Alan Duggan (0-3), Michael Collins.

Subs used: Daniel Bohan (ht) (0-1), Dale Counihan (59m).

BEST OF LUCK: to the Kerry Minors (including our own Dylan Casey, Ciarán O’Reilly and Michael Slattery) and Seniors (including our own Kieran Donaghy and Ronan Shanahan), as they take on Cavan and Mayo in their respective All Ireland semi finals in Croke Park next Sunday (20th Aug).

B FOOTBALL: Ballyduff 2-12; Austin Stacks 0-12.

On a fine sunny evening in Ballyduff, on last Saturday (12th Aug), our B team had to give way to a physically stronger local side in the second last round of the Co. League. Despite the defeat our lads played well as a unit with some fine individual performances also. Barry Galvin couldn’t be faulted for the goals and made one spectacular save on the stroke of half time at the end of which Ballyduff led by 1-8 to 0-8.

All our six backs did exceptionally well also, defending superbly and giving some great balls in to our forwards. At centre field both Craig Corcoran and Ciarán Flanagan fielded some mighty balls at times, and up front all our six starting forwards got on the score sheet.

Our three substitutes, Kevin, Ronan and Micko did very well also with Micko linking superbly with Dylan Harnett mid way through the second half for a great point.

Team: Barry Galvin, Brandon Patterson, Cathal O’Reilly, Seán Tansley, Andrew Morrissey, Dylan Harnett (0-1), Daniel Bohan, Craig Corcoran, Ciarán Flanagan, Eoghan Galvin (0-1), Seamus Bastible (0-3 – two frees), Fergal Ryan (0-1), Dale Counihan (0-3 – one free), Cian O’Sullivan (0-1), David O’Sullivan (0-2).

Subs used: Kevin Murphy, Ronan Carey and Micko Horan (all at 35m).

We now turn our thoughts to the Town League semi final against Kerins O’Rahillys which is due to go ahead in Connolly Park on next Friday evening (18th Aug) at 7.30pm.
