Austin StacksSENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 2-16; Ardfert 1-11.

This Club Championship quarter final in Ardfert on last Saturday evening (25th April) provided entertaining fare for the sizeable attendance.

Aware of the opposition’s never-say-die attitude it was imperative for our boys to hit the ground running and they did just that, putting in a very good first half performance which left them ahead at the break by 2-11 to 1-4.

Goals from Barry Shanahan in the 19th minute and Fiachna Mangan in the 30thand a spread of points from six different players, including two defenders Pa McCarthy and Denis McElligott, gave us a good cushion at half time.

Although we increased that lead with three quick points (David Mannix, Shane O’Callaghan and Shane Carroll) within six minutes of the resumption, Ardfert, in typical fashion, took full advantage when we went down to 14 men in the 38th minute.  In the next twelve minutes they added five points without reply and could have added more but for some brilliant defending by our lads.

In the closing ten minutes both sides scored two each – ours coming from a second Pa McCarthy effort and the final score from David Mannix. In all a very good display by our squad with 2-14 coming from play.

Team: Jonathan Conway, Ronan Shanahan, Barry Shanahan (1-0), Denis McElligott (0-1), Pa McCarthy (0-2), Fearghal MacNamara, Conor Jordan, Wayne Guthrie, Shane Guthrie, Daniel Bohan (Capt), Greg Horan (0-3), Shane Carroll (0-4), David Mannix (0-4 – 2 frees), Shane O’Callaghan (0-2), Fiachna Mangan (1-0).

Subs used: Seán Ryan (44m), William Kirby (50m), John Dennis (54m), Barry Walsh (57m), Ciarán O’Connell (60m).

Next up in the competition is a semi final date with Dingle – the only team we lost to during the 2014 calendar year – and that was at the quarter final stage of last season’s Club Championship.

But before that we have two home games in the Co. League. The first is our postponed Round 1 game against Waterville on Saturday next,( 2nd May) at 6.45pm and then on the following week (9th/10th May) it’s the eagerly awaited round 4 game against Dr. Crokes which also doubles up as the 2014 Co. League Final.
