CHURCH GATE COLLECTION: The Austin Stacks Annual Church gate collection takes place on the weekend of Nov 25/26th. If anyone is free to volunteer 20 minutes of their time to  help us out on either the Saturday night or at any of the Sunday Masses it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Club Secretary, Elma Nix on 086 1053300.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 5-13; Na Gaeil 2-6.

Our B team retained their Town League trophy with a good win over an under-strength Na Gaeil side at a cold, breezy but dry afternoon in the Nuns Field, Connolly Park on Sunday  (5th Nov).  We played with the aid of that strong breeze in the first half but it was the visitors who opened the scoring after just 43 seconds.

However two pointed frees by Alan Duggan, following good work by Barry Walsh, Colin Griffin and Cathal O’Reilly and a lovely point from play by Dale Counihan with good support play by Alan Duggan and Craig Corcoran left us in the lead after six minutes.

Both sides then had a point each in the next two minutes – ours coming from a brilliant effort by John Murphy who raced upfield from his corner back position to put over. But Na Gaeil were back in the lead by the 11th minute with a well-taken goal.

That however was their last score of the half while we took complete control and went on to score 3-6 without reply.

Alan Duggan was unerring from frees and play, adding a further four (two each from play and frees) to add to his opening two points. The other two points came from Colin Griffin and Dale Counihan and the three superb goals came in the 18th, 20th and 29th minutes from Dale, Cathal O’Reilly and Craig Corcoran. This left us ahead at the break by 3-10 to 1-2.

As they did in the first half Na Gaeil were quickest off the mark from the resumption, goaling after 25 seconds. Six minutes later this was cancelled out when team captain, Dale Counihan got through for his second goal which was followed by two more points by Shane Guthrie and another Alan Duggan free. Na Gaeil then added four successive points in as many minutes (44th to 48th minutes).

But as in the first half we finished the game the stronger adding a goal (Seamus Bastible) and a point (Shane Guthrie) before referee Paul Hayes blew the final whistle.

So a good end to the season with a very strong performance by our lads with all 19 who lined out playing superbly, including team captain, Dale Counihan who ended up chief scorer (2-2), just a point ahead of Alan Duggan (0-7) with eight players in total getting on the score sheet.
