SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 2-13; Na Gaeil 2-7.

This second round (of 5) of the Town League played on a dry early afternoon in Connolly Park yesterday (4th Feb) was proof, if proof was needed, that Na Gaeil’s second division status in this season’s Co. League was thoroughly deserved.

The visitors had a brilliant start and, after a patient build-up, found themselves a goal ahead after just eighty seconds. Our first score came in the 7th minute, a point from play by Shane Carroll, followed, a minute later, by a similar effort by David Mannix. Na Gaeil’s first point came in the 10th minute and then, a minute later, a brilliant run up-field from his full back position by Jack O’Shea found David Mannix who netted from close range. This put us in the lead for the first (1-2 to 1-1).

But Na Gaeil kept up the pressure and in the second quarter outscored us by 1-3 to 0-1 – our solitary effort coming from a 22nd minute free by David Mannix. Na Gaeil’s goal came from a 25th minute penalty. This left the visitors with a four points lead at the break (2-4 to 1-3).

However, we got to grips with the situation in the second half, out-scoring our opponents by 1-10 to 0-3 in this second period, ending the game with six points to spare – our 2nd half goal coming late on (61st minute) from Ferdia O’Brien – great to have Ferdia back again after an absence – his last game was in July 2016.

It was also good to see Brandon Patterson making his Senior debut and Brandon performed well when introduced late in the second half. It was equally good  to see the return of both John Dennis and Conor Jordan who were coming back from long-term injuries.

Team: Barry Galvin, John Dennis, Jack O’Shea (0-1), Denis Costello, Pa McCarthy, Conor Jordan, Shane Walsh  Shane Guthrie (Capt), Michael O’Donnell (0-1), Shane O’Callaghan (0-1), David Mannix (1-8 – four frees) Shane Carroll (0-1), Ferdia O’Brien (1-0), Fergal Ryan, Donagh McKivergan..

Subs used: David Fitzmaurice (29m), Colin Griffin (ht), Darragh O’Brien (48m) (0-1), Brandon Patterson (52m).

The remaining three rounds of the Town League are as follows – at home to Kerins O’Rahillys on next Sunday (11th Feb) at 12.30pm; at home to John Mitchels on 18th Feb and away to Ardfert on 25th Feb.

The top two teams will qualify for the final which is provisionally fixed for the weekend of the 4th March.

CONGRATULATIONS: to Club Footballer Denis McElligott and Nicole Roche who had a special event last week to celebrate their Engagement.

MINOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 8-12; Ballymac 1-6.

Our Minors had a good start to the season with a comfortable win in round 1 of the Town League played in Connolly Park on yesterday afternoon (4th Feb). The margin of victory can be explained in part by Ballymac playing the game without their Tralee CBS players, but nonetheless this was a super display by our lads, seven of whom were making their Minor debuts – Luke Chester, Niall Fitzmaurice, Michael O’Gara, Adan Curran, Conor Myers, Seán Carmody and Charlie Curran. Nine of the 17 who lined out got on the score sheet. So a great start that will have really pleaded Darragh Long and his fellow management team (Dave Scanlon, David Mannix and Mikey Collins).

Team (13 a side): David Oba, Donagh McMahon, Dara Barry Walsh, Dylan Casey, Jack McGrath (Capt), Michael O’Gara, David Couchman, Adam Curran, Daniel O’Rourke, Dean Scanlon, Conor Myers, Michael Slattery, Seán Carmody,

Subs used: Luke Chester, Niall Fitzmaurice, Joe Looby, Charlie Curran.

With Ardfert after joining the group late on we now have four remaining round robin games  as follows:- at home to Na Gaeil on next Saturday (10th Feb) at 3.30pm, away to John Mitchels (25th Feb), away to Ardfert (24th March) and at home to Kerins O’Rahillys (Easter Monday, 2nd April).

The Co. League (Div 1) fixtures have also come to hand and our five round robin games are as follows: Laune Rangers at home (17th Feb), Dr. Crokes away (3rd March), Cordal/Scartaglin away (10th March), Killarney Legion at home (Monday, 19th March) and Kilgarvan/Tuosist at home (13th April).
