SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-12; Kerins O’Rahillys  0-9.

Our Seniors made it three wins out of three in this 3rd round of the Town League played at a wintry Connolly Park on yesterday afternoon (11th Feb). It snowed for the first ten minutes of the game and for the last ten minutes but despite this some very good football was produced by both sides.

Wayne and his colleagues continued to use their very comprehensive squad, using a further seven players who did not play in last week’s game, including last year’s Minor, Shane Kelliher who was making his Senior debut.

We dominated the first half and led by 0-8 to 0-3 at half time. Michael O’Donnell scored four (three from play), including two long-ranged efforts. Darragh O’Brien put over a 24th minute forty five and our remaining three points came from three of our defenders – Conor Jordan, Pa McCarthy and Jack O’Shea.

We also had a very good start to the second half with our opening two points coming from two super efforts by Theo Diggin followed by a third by Shane O’Callaghan. Strand Road then came more into the game and had the next four points to reduce our lead to four (0-11; 0-7) as the game entered the last five minutes. But another Michael O’Donnell point followed almost immediately by the only goal of the game, made by David Fitzmaurice and put away beautifully by Donagh McKivergan , his first at Senior level, put the game to bed and we ended up with six points to spare – the same winning margin as last week.

Team: David Hennessy, Paul Galvin, Conor Jordan (0-1), Colin Griffin, Pa McCarthy (0-1), Jack O’Shea (0-1), John Murphy, Shane Guthrie (Capt), Michael O’Donnell (0-5 – one free), Theo Diggin (0-2), Darragh O’Brien (0-1), David Fitzmaurice, Ferdia O’Brien, Shane O’Callaghan (0-1), Dale Counihan.

Subs used: Donagh McKivergan (12m) (1-0), Brandon Patterson (36m), Shane Walsh (41m), John Dennis (51m), Andrew Morrissey (54m), Shane Kelliher (54m).

The remaining two rounds of the Town League are both away – against John Mitchels on this Friday night  (16th Feb) at 8.15pm  and away to Ardfert on Sunday week (25th Feb).

The top two teams will qualify for the final which is provisionally fixed for the weekend of the 4th March.

MINOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 4-9; Na Gaeil 0-13.

Played yesterday afternoon (11th Feb) in a bitterly cold Connolly Park with frequent heavy showers of hail and snow these two teams provided some brilliant free-flowing football, despite the adverse conditions, in round 2 of the Town League.

And, not for the first time, the old adage of ‘goals win matches’ proved true. Both sides had 13 scores each but four of our scores were goals – two by Michael Slattery – to add to the two he scored last week – and one each  by Dean Scanlon and Seán Carmody.  Na Gaeil could have scored at least three goals but for some brilliant saves, in both halves, by David Oba. We led by 3-4 to 0-6 at half time – our four points coming from Dylan Casey, David Couchman, Dean Scanlon and Tom O’Farrell.

As well as our second half goal (Seán Carmody) we also added a further five points in this period – Michael Slattery, Adam Curran and Daniel O’Rourke on target early on – and the last two coming in the closing minutes by Donagh McMahon, who had just come on the pitch (he was substituted at half time with a slight injury) as a replacement for one of our lads who picked up a black card.

Team: David Oba, Craig Teahan, Donagh McMahon (0-2), Jack McGrath (Capt), Dara Barry Walsh, Dylan Casey (0-1), Eoghan Carroll, Seán Carmody (1-0), David Couchman (0-1), Adam Curran (0-1), Daniel O’Rourke (0-1), Dean Scanlon (1-1), Conor Myers, Michael Slattery  (2-1), Tom O’Farrell (0-1),

Subs used: Luke Chester (ht), Gearóid Sheehan (ht).

The Co. League gets underway on this coming weekend. We have a home game in the opening round against Laune Rangers. As we write the game is fixed for Saturday afternoon (17th Feb) at 3.30pm. The following week it’s back to Town League duty with a round 3 game away to John Mitchels (25th              Feb). Then our next three games will be in the Co. League – Dr. Crokes away (3rd March), Cordal/Scartaglin away (10th March), and Killarney Legion at home (Monday, 19th March
