MEDIA AWARD: Last Thursday (March 29th) Austin Stacks Club members travelled to GAA HQ to collect our National GAA Media Award. Austin Stacks were winners in the category – Best New Digital Initiative 2017 for our ‘Stacks 100’ website produced by Rory Kirby.

The award citation reads:  This website was commissioned especially to mark the centenary of the Austin Stacks hurling and football Club.  Stacks100.ie is a wonderful tribute to the club’s rich history and the people who have played their part in the Club’s development.

The platform allows the user to dig deep and explore the evolution of one of Kerry’s greatest clubs through the use of mixed media. This digital platform is a priceless resource.  Thanks & congratulations to everyone who contributed to this award winning project. Thanks also to Adrienne McLoughlin for the above report.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-15; Kerins O’Rahillys 0-13.

On a fine sunny Easter Saturday evening (31st March) in Austin Stack Park we came away with a good win in the first round of the new format Club Championship.

We had a very good start and were three points up after four minutes – Michael O’Donnell with the opener and two by David Mannix, all from play. Rahillys first score came in the 7th minute – a pointed free.

Two good points from Ferdia O’Brien left us five points to one ahead at the end of the first quarter.

However, Rahillys had a very good second quarter, scoring six points to just two for us – Jack O’Shea and Kieran Donaghy on target. This left the sides level at half time (0-7 each).

And the sides were still level as we approached the final quarter (0-10 each) with our three points coming from David Mannix, Greg Horan and Jack O’Shea, all from play, But the game changer came right on the 45th minute when Kieran Donaghy pounced on a short kick-out and his perfect cross was tapped into the net by David Mannix for the only goal of the game.

Two minutes later Rahillys could have goaled themselves but for a brilliant save by David Hennessy.

We then added three more points in quick succession – two David Mannix frees and one from play by Shane Carroll, who was just five minutes on the pitch at that stage. This left us six ahead with six minutes of normal time remaining.

And even though Rahillys never gave up the ghost we had a five points winning margin at the end – our two remaining points coming from Ferdia O’Brien and Greg Horan.

This was a very solid performance by our lads with all seventeen who lined out playing out of their skin, including Ronan Shanahan who was making his first appearance of the season after his excellent spell with the Kerry Seniors in the National Football League campaign.

Team; David Hennessy, Barry Walsh, Conor Jordan, Ronan Shanahan, Pa McCarthy, Jack O’Shea (0-2), Denis McElligott, Shane Guthrie (Capt), Greg Horan (0-2), Shane O’Callaghan, Darragh O’Brien, Michael O’Donnell (0-1), David Mannix (1-5 – two frees), Kieran Donaghy (0-1), Ferdia O’Brien (0-3).

Subs used: Shane Carroll (45m) (0-1), Michael Slattery (54m).

Our two remaining round robin games are against An Ghaeltacht which goes ahead in Connolly Park on next Sunday (8thApril) at 2.30pm and  then away to Dr. Crokes on the following week-end (15th April).

MINOR FOOTBALL: As we write our Minors are due to travel to Cordal to play the local combination Cordal/Scart on this Thursday evening (5th April) in round 3 of the Co. League. Throw in is at 6.30pm.

To date both sides have played two of their five round robin games. We have won our two – against Laune Rangers (2-12 to 1-8) and against Killarney Legion (4-17 to 3-7) while Cordal/Scart have won one (against Killarney Legion 6-13 to 0-10) and drawn one (against Kilgarvan/Tuosist 2-12 to 3-9).
