SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-16; Piarsaigh Na Dromoda 0-9,

We made it four wins out of five after this Co. League game played on a fine, sunny Saturday evening (26th May) in Connolly Park. We had 1-10 on the board before Dromid opened their account in the 25th minute.

Our first score came from another well-taken forty five by Darragh O’Brien after one minute of play, Darragh went on to score a further 1-5 before the end of the half with brother, Ferdia putting over three. That only left space for Shane Carroll, David Mannix and Michael O’Donnell to score the other three points of the half which left us ahead by 1-12 to 0-2 at the break.

The fact that Dromid had scored only two points in that first half wasn’t that they performed poorly or that they had a plethora of wides – they had only two wides in fact (we had just one wide). No. It was mostly due to a superb performance by our defence. On many occasions interventions by a number of players, including Barry Walsh, Jack O’Shea and Denis Costello, prevented certain scores.

For the second game in a row goalkeeper, Robbie Murphy, made a number of vital saves, including one superb effort early in the second half. Shane Guthrie and Michael O’Donnell dominated midfield while Greg Horan and Wayne Guthrie were among others that shone throughout.

Both got on the score sheet during the second half, a half where we eased off slightly, scoring just four points in total, while the opposition scored seven. Our other two points in this half came from Ferdia O’Brien and Pa McCarthy.

Team: Robbie Murphy, Barry Walsh, John Dennis, Denis Costello, Pa McCarthy (0-1), Jack O’Shea, Greg Horan (0-1), Shane Guthrie (Capt), Michael O’Donnell (0-1), Wayne Guthrie (0-1), Darragh O’Brien (1-6 – one forty five, 3 frees), Shane Carroll (0-1), David Mannix (0-1), Shane O’Callaghan, Ferdia O’Brien (0-4).

Subs used: Darragh Scanlon (35m), Fergal Ryan (45m), Dale Counihan (52m), Ciarán O’Connell (55m), Seamus Bastible (58m), Danny Carroll (58m).

Our next outing will be in round 6 of the Co. League when we travel six miles out the road to play Ardfert. The game is scheduled for the week-end after next (w/e 10th June).

B FOOTBALL: Churchill 4-15; Austin Stacks 1-14.

Churchill gave another top of the table performance in this high-scoring Co. League round 5 game played on their own excellent pitch at Ballyea on Sunday afternoon (27th May). The first indication that this could be a high-scoring game (there was 22 scores in the first half but only 12 in the second period) came inside the first minute when both sides were on the score sheet. Gearóid Fitzgerald won the throw-in, found Danny Carroll who laid-off to team captain, Dale Counihan who pointed after just 15 seconds.

From the kick-out Churchill raced up-field to equalize after just 48 seconds. The home side went on to dominate the opening 18 minutes, at the end of which they led by 1-9 to 0-2 – our only other score coming in the 7th minute from a Danny Carroll free.

Our lads, however, had a very good closing 10 minutes when we outscored the opposition by 1-6 to 1-2. Theo Diggin was the dominant scorer during this period with 1-2 to his credit, with the remaining four points coming from two Danny Carroll frees and one each from play by two of our attacking defenders – Fergal Ryan and Donagh McMahon. This left us with a two goal deficit at half time (2-11 to 1-8).

In contrast to the first half it took five minutes for the first score to come after the resumption – another pointed free by Danny Carroll (Danny had an outstanding game. Apart from his scoring ability he won an amount of ball that he shouldn’t have won and it’s great to see him back to his best after an absence). The next score – a goal for Churchill in the 39th minute – really put them on the road to victory. We never gave up, however, and went on to add five more points – two more by Theo Diggin (one from a 45 to add to the 45 he put over in the first half) and one each from play by Danny Carroll, Fergal Ryan and the last score of the game by Seamus Bastible. In this period Churchill scored a further 1-3 (referee, Ger Lynch had Churchill down for an extra point which we obviously missed) with their 4th goal coming in the 60th minute.

It was also good to see TJ Hogan back in action again, making his first appearance in a Black & Amber jersey in over two years (his last outing was in another Co. League game – against Rathmore – in April 2016).

The Management team gave debuts also to three Minor players – Donagh McMahon, Gearóid Fitzgerald and Michael O’Gara – and all three played exceptionally well.

Team: Pa Fitzgibbon, Michael Linnane, Donagh McMahon (0-1), Rory Forbes, Fergal Ryan (0-2), Ciarán O’Connell, Michael O’Gara, William Kirby, Gearóid Fitzgerald, Gearóid Sheehan, Dale Counihan (Capt) (0-1), Theo Diggin (1-4 – two 45s), Danny Carroll (0-5 – three frees), Gearóid McCann, Seamus Bastible (0-1).

Subs used: Seán Dukes (40m), TJ Hogan (42m), Micko Horan (48m).

Like our Seniors our B team’s next encounter is in round 6 of the Co. League on the weekend after next (w/e 10th June). Connolly Park is the venue for our game against Valentia.
