RUN FOR THE ROCK: Following the outstanding success of last year’s event – the Paul Lucey Memorial Run for the Rock event is back for 2019. The 5K and 10k Walk/Run will take place on the now customary May Bank Holiday Monday (6th May).

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Na Gaeil 2-10 (16); Austin Stacks 4-12 (24).

After our defeat in the opening game against Kilcummin this round 2 of the Co. League played at Killeen on Sunday afternoon (24th March) was a must win for us, but Na Gaeil, who were missing their key Kerry players, put it up to us big time, especially during the first half at the end of which they led by one point (2-7 to 2-6).

Half way through the second half the sides were still level (we 3-7 to Na Gaeil 2-10). But we had a brilliant closing quarter and whether it was a coincidence or not it all began to take off when Seán Quilter came on the pitch in the 47th minute.

In those closing minutes we added 1-5 while keeping the opposition scoreless. And four of those points were scored by Seán in this his second game at Senior level (he made his debut a few weeks ago in the Town League game against Strand Road).

Our two first half goals came from Wayne Guthrie in the 8th minute and Donagh McKivergan in the 17th minute.

And the two in the second half were the first and last scoreS of this half – Darragh O’Brien on target in the 37th minute and an opportunist goal by Colin Griffin on the stroke of full time. Darragh was also unerring from placed balls, putting over six in total during the course of the hour.

Team: Barry Galvin, Colin Griffin (1-0), Barry Shanahan, Dylan Casey, Jack O’Shea, Conor Jordan (Capt) (0-1), Ronan Shanahan, Greg Horan (0-1), Wayne Guthrie (1-0), Jack Morgan, Darragh O’Brien (1-6 – five frees), Ciaran O’Reilly, Shane O’Callaghan, Joseph O’Connor, Donagh McKivergan (1-0).

Subs used: Michael O’Gara (40m), Seán Quilter (47m) (0-4 – two frees), Fergal Ryan (49m).

We have a break now in the Co. League until the second week-end of May – our next opponents are none other than Dr. Crokes in round 3 of the League. In the meantime it will be all Club Championship activity during the month of April. Our first game will be at a neutral venue (Annascaul) in our first game of three against Dingle and that’s fixed for Sunday, 7th April at 2.30pm. The other two teams that we must face in group 1 are Kenmare Shamrocks and Kilcummin. Group 2 is also composed of four teams – Dr. Crokes, Kerins O’Rahillys, Legion and Rathmore.

B FOOTBALL; Austin Stacks 4-14; Beaufort 0-7.

Beaufort started well in this round 2 game played in Connolly Park on Sunday at noon (24th March) and led by two points to one after eight minutes. But once we opened our account in the 11th minute with a Pa McCarthy goal wethen drove on from there and dominated the remainder of the half, adding a further 1-8 (our second goal coming from Ferdia O’Brien in the 18th minute) to two more points for the visitors. This left us with a 2-8 to 0-4 lead at half time.

The second half was of a similar pattern to the first with we adding a further 2-6 to 0-3 for the opposition. Our two second half goals came from Ferdia O’Brien and  Cathal O’Reilly.

This was another brilliant attacking performance by all our 21 lads to add to our equally brilliant performance away to Mitchels in the opening round (4-17 to 0-4).

Team; Seamus Bastible, Shane Kelliher, Denis Costello, John Murphy, Paul Galvin, Ciarán O’Connell, Andrew Morrissey (Capt) (0-1), David Fitzmaurice (0-1), Paul Barrett (0-1), Shane Walsh (0-1), Pa McCarthy (1-1), Pádraig Looney (0-1), Dale Counihan, Gearóid Fitzgerald (0-1), Ferdia O’Brien (2-6 – five frees).

Subs used: Brandon Patterson, Eoghan Galvin and Dean Scanlon (0-1) at half time; Cathal O’Reilly (41m) (1-0), and Rory Forbes and Fiachna Mangan (48m).

We now have a break of seven weeks before round 3 is due to be played (w/e 12th May) and that game will be away to Killarney Legion.

MINOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-11; Killarney Legion 2-12.

On the day we had to give way to a better Legion side in this postponed round 2 Co. League game played in Connolly Park on last Saturday afternoon (23rd March).  An evenly contested first twenty minutes saw the sides level on four points apiece – Conor Myers with two and one each from Jordan Kissane and Shane Bastible on target for us. Legion finished the half the stronger, adding three more points which was the difference between the sides at the break (0-7 to 0-4).

Twelve minutes into the second we had reduced that deficit to two (0-9 to 0-7) with two more points from Conor Myers and a pointed free by Sean Quilter against two by the visitors. But the game changer came in the 43rd minute when the Killarney boys got through for a well-taken goal.

Five minutes later they added a second after Seán Quilter had pointed a free for us in between. Then, within a minute, another quickly-taken free by Seán was finished to net by Cian Purcell to reduce the lead to four. With both sides then scoring three each in the closing ten minutes of the game that was still the difference when referee Joseph Murphy (Ballyduff) blew the final whistle.

Team: Ben Quilter, Niall Fitzmaurice, David Burke, Joey Nagle, Luke Chester, Dara Barry Walsh, Eoghan Carroll, Seán Quilter (0-3 – frees), Adam Curran, Shane Bastible (0-1), Daniel O’Rourke, Armin Heinrich, Jordan Kissane (0-1), Conor Myers (0-6 – two frees), Cian Purcell (1-0).

Subs used: Padraic Linnane (ht), Craig Teahan (46m), Greg Scanlon (57m).

Two wins and two losses in our four games to date leaves us in third position on the League table with the first four teams going through to the semi finals.

We now have one more round to play and that’s away to Na Gaeil on next Saturday (30th March) at 4pm and a win here should qualify us for that semi final spot.
