SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 2-11; Dr. Crokes 2-4.

In this 3rd round of the Co. League played in ideal conditions in Connolly Park on yesterday afternoon (12th May) we found ourselves trailing by four points at half time (1-4 to 0-3). But our boys put up an almost perfect performance in the second half to hold the visitors scoreless from play – Crokes only score in this second period coming from a 54th minute penalty.

Both sides were on two points each at the end of the first quarter – our two came from play, both by Seán Quilter. In the 17th minute Crokes pounced on a defensive error to put away a well-taken goal. They followed this with two more points, one from play and the other from a free. The last score of the half went to our lads when Darragh O’Brien pointed a free following a foul on Seán Quilter.

We had a brilliant start to the second half with four unanswered points in the opening 15 minutes to put us on level terms for the second time in the game – three from Darragh O’Brien and one from Seán Quilter. Then in the 46th minute came what turned out to be the game changer when centre-back Ronan Shanahan found himself at end of a good move, in which Conor Jordan and Seán Quilter were prominent, to slot to the net. We then added three more points during the next four minutes – all from play – to extend our lead to six points – with Greg Horan, Darragh O’Brien and Seán Quilter on target.

But Crokes gave themselves a life-line in the 54th minute when they converted that penalty which we referred to earlier. However we finished out the game the stronger with another  Seán Quilter point from play and a goal in the 60th minute by substitute Donagh McKivergan to leave us with seven points to spare at the end – one better when the sides last met in the Club Championship Final just two weeks earlier.

Jack Morgan was unlucky to pick up an injury during the first half and we all wish him a full and speedy recovery.

The win moves us up to 3rd spot on the League table and we now prepare for a visit to Rathmore on the week-end after next (w/e 26th May) to meet the home side in round 4 of the League, who are on 7th position with one win, one draw and one loss after their opening three rounds.

Team: Robbie Murphy, Colin Griffin, Barry Shanahan, Jack O’Shea, Ciarán O’Connell, Ronan Shanahan (1-0), Jack Morgan, Conor Jordan (Capt), Shane Carroll, Greg Horan (0-1), Darragh O’Brien (0-5 – 3 frees), Fiachna Mangan, Seán Quilter (0-5), Ferdia O’Brien, Shane O’Callaghan.

B FOOTBALL: Killarney Legion 1-15; Austin Stacks 1-11.

After two comprehensive wins in their opening two rounds of the Co. League our B team’s trip to Killarney in round 3 of the competition ended with their first defeat of the season. Kilgarvan, with three wins out of three now top the League but, despite our defeat, we are still in second place. We now have a bye in round 4 so our next outing will be a home game against that very Kilgarvan outfit on the weekend of the 9th June.
