SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-17; An Ghaeltacht 0-9.
On a fine, dry, summers evening (13th July) in Connolly Park our first half performance was enough to secure victory in this eight round of the Co. League after we led by 0-10 to 0-1 at the break.

Six of those points came from  Darragh O’Brien who was unerring from both play and placed balls. And our defensive display in that first half was outstanding. Time after time many attacks by the opposition were turned over by our six defenders.

Then, five minutes into the second half, the game was really put to bed, when corner-forward, Shane O’Callaghan burst his way through for the only goal of the game after a brilliant build-up involving Michael O’Gara and Wayne Guthrie.

And this was Shane’s third goal in as many games. The West Kerry boys did put on a far better show during that second period but we continued to outscore them by 1-7 to 0-8 in those last 30 minutes.

Wayne and his colleagues emptied the bench in that second half and the five subs who were introduced played exceptionally well.

The victory makes it six wins out of eight and now leaves us on top of the League Table on our own with twelve points, followed by Rathmore on 11 and four teams on ten points – Rahillys, Crokes, Spa and Dingle. So with three more rounds to be played the League has never been closer with any one of the top nine teams still in contention to win the League.

Team: Robbie Murphy, Colin Griffin, Barry Shanahan, John Dennis, Jack O’Shea, Conor Jordan (Capt), Ciarán O’Reilly, Wayne Guthrie, Shane Carroll (0-2), Pa McCarthy, Greg Horan (0-1), Michael O’Gara, Ferdia O’Brien (0-1), Darragh O’Brien (0-9 – four frees, one forty five), Shane O’Callaghan (1-1).

Subs used: Seán Quilter (39m) (0-2 – one free), Ciarán O’Connell (43m), Barry Galvin (45m), Fiachna Mangan (50m) (0-1), David Fitzmaurice (53m).

Rounds nine and ten are now scheduled to be played in the next two weeks. We are away on next Saturday (20th July) to Legion and on the following weekend we have a home game against Spa. Our 11th and final game will be away to St Marys on a date to be confirmed.

B FOOTBALL: Rathmore 1-6; Austin Stacks 3-11.
Our B team gave a brilliant display in Rathmore in their round 8 Co. League gamelast Saturday evening, making it four wins out of seven to maintain 5th position on the League table. Thanks to Tim O’Rourke for the following details.

Scorers: Donagh McMahon 1-5 (one free), Donagh McKivergan 1-1 (penalty goal), Pádraig Looney 1-1, and Dale Counihan, Pádraic Linnane, Daniel O’Rourke and Shane Kelliher 0-1 each.
Like our Seniors our B team have also three more rounds to play in this season’s League. The first of these will be at home on this Saturday evening (20th July) against current table-toppers Knocknagoshel (they have won all their seven rounds so far). Throw-in at Connolly Park is 7.30pm. Then on the following week-end we are away to Asdee with the last round-robin game at home to Cromane on a date to be fixed.

WELL DONE: to the Kerry Under 2Os, including our own Joseph O’Connor, Seán Quilter and Dylan Casey, on their Munster semi final win last week and best of luck to the team as they take on Cork in the Munster Final in Páirc Uí Rinn on this Thursday evening (18th July).

And of course well done also to the Kerry Seniors on Sunday on their big win over Mayo and the best of luck in their remaining two Super 8 games against Donegal (next Sunday) and Meath (Aug. Bank Holiday week-end).

THE C TEAM: Our fifth and final round of the Co. League, at home to John Mitchels, is fixed for next Friday evening (19th July) at 7.30pm.

MINOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-6; East Kerry 6-12.
With the two teams already through to the quarter finals this last game in the group stage, played in Connolly Park on this Tuesday evening (9th July), was used as a tester for things to come and the one thing we did learn, if we hadn’t know already, is that East Kerry will be ‘thee’ team to overcome in this season’s championship. They led by 4-8 to 1-3 at half time and in the second half added a further 2-4 to 0-3 for us.

Team; Ben Quilter, Niall Fitzmaurice, Luke Chester, Craig Teahan, David Burke, Adam Curran, Mark Holden, Eoghan Carroll (Capt) (0-1), Dara Barry Walsh, Tom O’Farrell, Daniel O’Rourke, Greg Scanlon, Cian Purcell (1-0), Mervyn Shalamba (0-1), Conor Myers (0-4 – one free).
Subs used: Joey Nagle (41m), Conor Horan (41m), Matthew Browne (55m).

So the way is now clear for the quarter final draw. We cannot be drawn against East Kerry at the quarter final stage but could be drawn against any of the other six teams who have come through the group stage – that’s Kenmare District, West Kerry, St. Brendans and Mid Kerry (Divisional teams) and the two other Club teams, along with ourselves, Laune Rangers and Rathmore.

There will be a break now in Co. Championship activity until Kerry complete their All Ireland campaign. We wish Kerry (including our own Luke Chester and Adam Curran) the best of luck in their next outing in the All Ireland quarter final against Tyrone on the week-end after next (w/e 28th July).

In the meantime, at county level, the Central League commences this week when we welcome a Renard/St. Marys combination to Connolly Park on this Thursday evening (18th July) for a 7pm start (please note the earlier starting time). We are away then in the other two rounds on the following Thursday evenings – against Laune Rangers (25th July) and against Keel/Listry on 1st August.
