1920 COMMEMORATION CEREMONY: The commemoration ceremony for the victims of Bloody Sunday held at the club grounds on Saturday night went very well. The forecourt was lit up with the outside lights and the ceremony was held out of doors.

Because of the Level 5 pandemic restrictions the club membership was represented by a limited number of senior members, including Club Chairman, Billy Ryle, Club Vice Chairman, Eamonn O’Reilly (himself a Tipperary man), former Club Chairperson Mairead Fernane and our Co. Board Delegate, Eddie Barrett (grand nephew of Austin Stack).
Mairéad (Oifigeach na Gaeilge agus an Chultúir í gClub na Stacaig), did a great deal of the organisational work for this event.

It was very tastefully done and an appropriate and solemn way to remember and honour the fourteen people who lost their lives on that fateful day in Croke Park on Sunday, 21st November 1920.

In his brilliant oration Billy listed the 14 people who perished on that day, including the Tipperary team captain, Michael Hogan after whom the Hogan Stand in Croke Park is named. Eamonn presented the Club with a replica of Michael’s jersey and at the end of the ceremony Mairead gave a rendition of Ned Drummond’s famous poem – The Boys for the Top of the Rock’.

CONGRATULATIONS: to Rory Kirby who has won a prestigious Radio Drama Award for his play ‘The Gypsy Girl’. This of course is not the first time that Rory has won such an awards, as he has also won Club related awards in the past with his GAA McNamee Award in 2014 – Rockumentary – which followed our SF Co. Championship win that year and also his win in 2018 with the Stacks100.ie. Well done again Rory.

THE HIGHEST SCORE: At the conclusion of the Provincial SF Championships last week-end many were wondering if the high score put up by Dublin (3-21) created a record for Senior Provincial Championship Finals.

It was close but not the highest. Dublin did set the record in Leinster in 2008 when they went two better – scoring 3-23 (32 pts) in that final against Wexford. Cavan set the Ulster record away back in 1933 when they scored one less (31pts – 6-13) against Tyrone.

In Munster Kerry and Cork share the record with 29 pts. Kerry reached that number of points on two occasions – in 1919 they scored 6-11 against Clare and in 1976 they scored 3-20 against Cork. Then Cork turned the tables in 1990 when they scored 2-23 against Kerry’s 1-11.

But the highest score of all happened in the Connacht Final of 2015 when Mayo scored 6-25 (43 pts) in their win over Sligo.

AND THE REPEAT OF 1920: Very few could have written this script – that the four teams to contest this year’s All Ireland SF semi finals would have been the same that contested the 1920 semi finals. And not alone that but the pairings would be exactly the same.

And what’s the betting that the results in the games to be played on the weekend after next will be the same as 100 years ago. In 1920 Dublin defeated Cavan by 3-6 to 1-3 in the first semi final while Tipperary had a five points win over Mayo (1-5 to 1-0).

CLUBHOUSE: With our Bar and Clubhouse on lockdown for the last number of weeks we, like many others, are now awaiting as to what will transpire over the next few days with regard to a reopening of business.
