JANUARY IN THE PAST: As these are the last January Notes of this year let us reflect on some of the random happenings during the last ten Januarys. It all began in 2011 when the Club elected its first ever female Secretary, Catherine Ryan who served in that capacity for three seasons.

Elma Nix then followed in 2014 and Elma has just commenced her eight consecutive season as Club Secretary. Then after serving two seasons (2017 and 2018) as Vice Chair, Máireád Fernane created history when she took over the Chair in 2019 to become the first ever female Chairperson and follow in the footsteps of her late uncle Dan O’Sullivan who was the Club’s first ever Chairman (1917-1919).

Other events that happened in January during the last ten years included the appointment of Stephen Stack as SF Manager in 2013  – Stephen then went on to guide the team to Co. Championship glory the following year winning the title for the 13th time in total. In 2015 Rory Kirby’s DVD Documentary won the McNamee Award with a presentation ceremony in Croke Park.

Finally, among  those who passed away during January of those ten years included two former players – Aengus Fanning who was a member of our SF team of the late fifties and early sixties and who ended up as Editor of The Sunday Independent (he died 17th Jan 2012) and Sister Jessica Doyle who was a member of a great Camogie team the Club had in the 1920s/1930s. Jessica, who was 104 when she passed away on 19th Jan 2017 was an aunt of Angela Stephenson/Doyle (mother-in-law of Kieran Donaghy).

MULCHINOCK’S PLAQUE UNVEILING:  Over the weekend we posted a new video on our Stacks 100 website .  The video has received great reviews and will certainly provide a real trip down memory lane as it features many of the Auld Stock of the Rock, some now sadly deceased.  The occasion was the Unveiling of the Austin Stacks Plaque at Mulchinock’s Corner an event organised by the late Brendan Cronin who was a club officer at the time.   Later in the video we see members & Gil Brien’s Band make their way back to the clubhouse.

The video concludes with a must watch rendition of ‘The Boys from the Top of the Rock’ by the late Eily Casey Slattery in her own inimitable style. Outstanding stuff.  Visit www.stacks100.ie to view this and other gems.  Thanks to Tadgh & Tim Mc Mahon who discovered the video and updated the film so that we could post it online.  Anyone else out there with video footage of old matches, interviews, club events etc please do get in contact with us by emailing Secretary.austinstacks.kerry@gaa.ie
