APRIL IN THE PAST: (1st to 7th). On the field of play in 1992 (Sat. 4th April) our Senior Hurlers travelled to Kenmare to play the local side in a game that doubled up as the 1991 South Kerry Championship Final and the semi final of the 1992 South Kerry League and we came away with a splendid four points win (2-8 to 0-10).

Team: Tadhg O’Halloran, Tim Walsh, Brendan Long, Pat Murphy, John Lyons, Brian Neenan, Mikey John O’Shea, Joe Rogers, Pádraig Teahan, Eddie Murphy (1-0), Martin McKivergan (Capt) (0-1), David O’Regan (0-6), John Brennan (1-0), Colm Kennedy (0-1), Fergus McCarthy.

In 2009 (4th April) our Senior Footballers got their Co. League campaign off to a winning start with a trip to Annacaul (1-17 to 1-10).

Team: Martin Moriarty, Pa McCarthy, Barry Shanahan, Denis Costello, Tommy Costello, TJ Hogan (0-1 free), Daniel Bohan, Brían Mangan, Kieran Donaghy (1-2), Denis McElligott (0-1), Fiachna Mangan, Joey O’Connor, Graham O’Connell (0-6 – one free), Darragh Long (0-5 – one free), Michael Collins (0-2).

Subs used: Seán Power, Gearóid McCann, Alain Creagh, Shane Carroll, David Clifford.

Off the pitch in 1977 (7th April) a separate Juvenile Section of the Club was formed with Pat Murphy as Chairman. And in 1992 (3rdApril) the Dee Butcher Sponsorship of the Club was launched – a sponsorship that lasted for many years thereafter.

Finally the first week in April saw the passing of four outstanding Rockies. On 1st April 1962 there was a poignant day in Castleisland when Moss Slattery died suddenly while playing with the Stacks Senior team just aged 24. Then in 2000 (7th April) John Fitzgerald, a former footballer and Club Chairman (1941-43) died. Two years later (2nd April 2002) another former player, Peter Kearns (a brother of Liam’s) died at the young age of 38. And finally another outstanding footballer – Teddy Brick – died at the relatively young age of 60 on 3rd April 2015. Teddy had the unique record of never missing a Senior Co. Championship game from the day he made his debut on 28th July 1973 until the day he played his 34th and last Co. Championship game in 1984 (also on 28th July). In addition Teddy played 21 consecutive games in the Munster and All Ireland Club Championships between 16th Dec 1973 and 10th November 1979. And one other outstanding feature – he was never substituted in any of those 55 games. Some record.
