DEATH OF MARY BARRY: There was shock and sadness throughout the Club and the local community on Good Friday evening when news broke of the tragic death of Mary Barry (nee Keating) in a car accident.

Club Secretary, Elma Nix’s tribute on the Club Twitter and Facebook continued as follows – Mary’s Club connections run deep.

Her husband Paddy is our Senior B team manager, her son Diarmuid is part of our PRO team & her sister in law Mary Fitzmaurice is a valued member of our Club Executive.

Mary has previously represented the Austin Stacks GAA club in Senior Scòr Competitions in both Solo Singing & Recitation, most recently in 2018 when she won the Solo Singing in the Tralee District Finals.

She worked as part of the Special Needs Assistant Team at Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School which made her also well known to many of our younger players. Austin Stacks GAA club extends its heartfelt sympathies to all her family & friends at this very difficult & sad time.

We also extend our sincere sympathy to the family of Siobhán Shanahan (nee Brosnan), Adare and formerly Ballybunion, who was also involved in the accident and who sadly passed away on Easter Sunday. May they both rest in peace.

SYMPATHY: Sincere sympathy is also offered to the families of the following who died recently: Eileen ‘Eily Rose’ Leen, Park Lane and formerly Ballincollig, Kielduff and New York; Tony Lucid, Mitchel’s Avenue; and Jim Galvin, Tonevane (brother of former Club Footballer, Billy).

GAME TIME: With no action at inter-county level since last December’s All Ireland SF Final (19th Dec) and at Club level since 27th September last all in the GAA world are anxiously awaiting the news from GAA Headquarters this coming weekend as to the likely re-opening of activity for the remainder of the year. So, hopefully, we should have a clearer picture for next week’s Notes.

APRIL IN THE PAST: (8th to 14th). On the field of play in the space of a day during the second week of April 1995 both our Hurling and Football teams at under 14 levels recorded record scores for that year in their two opening games of the season, both in the Co. League.

First came our Hurlers on 9th April with a massive win against St. Pats (East Kerry) 14-6 to 0-0 (no – that’s not a misprint). Team: Kevin Walsh, Mark O’Regan (0-1), Conor O’Carroll, Tamar O’Carroll, Mikey Barry, Eddie Barry (Capt), Pádraig Sugrue (0-1), David Leonard, Colman Ó Gaoire, Michael Ashe, Padraig McMahon (1-4), TJ Hogan (1-0), Nicky O’Shea (5-0), Shane O’Callaghan (4-0), Stephen Enright (2-0). Subs: Martin Moriarty (1-0), Jonathan Conway.

Then on the following evening (10th April) our under 14 Footballers defeated Kilcummin (8-18 to 1-4) in  round 2 of the Co. League game. Team: Jonathan Conway, Brian Dennehy, Pádraig McMahon, Kieran Leonard, Gary Landers, David Varley, TJ Hogan, Darragh Long, Conor O’Carroll, Finbarr Smith, Mike Finn, Mark O’Regan (Capt), Eoin Broderick, Pádraig Sugrue, Michael Ashe. Subs: Shane O’Callaghan, Cathal Curtin, David Leonard, Andrew McCall, Michael Sheehy, Stephen Enright.

Off the pitch in 1919 Fr. Mícheál Galvin was born at 101 Rock St. (13th April). Fr. Mícheál was President of our Club for 65 years (1945-2010), a record that will be hard to surpass. A report in the Kerryman of 8th April 1972 broke the news to the wider public that the Club was about to get its own field. And on the 14th April 1988, one of the Club’s and County’s greatest footballer of all time, Mikey Sheehy, announced his retirement for inter-county football.

Finally the second week in April saw the passing of Denis Rory O’Connell, a player who won football and hurling trophies at county and club level.

Rory died on 11th April 1962 at the aged of 61. Rory resided in a house, now demolished, at Brewery Road, close to where St. Brendan’s Church now stands. Before the Tralee Clubs were forced to go on their own in the Co. Championship Rory won Hurling (1924 and 1925) and Football (1925 and 1926) Co. Championships with the Tralee combination.

He then won a further four Co. Championships with the Rock – two in Hurling (1928 and 1929) and two in Football (1928 and 1930). Then in his later years he was a very successful Greyhound trainer.
