SENIOR FOOTBALL: Spa Killarney 2-10; Austin Stacks 1-13.

For the second week in a row our Seniors had to depend on a last minute equalizer to share the points in this second game of the Co. League played in Spa, Killarney on last Saturday evening (19th June).

Last week it was Ferdia O’Brien who came to our rescue. On this occasion it was his brother Darragh who pointed, under pressure, from a free.

If somebody told you after 25 minutes that the game would end in a draw you would have him/her certified. At that stage we were ahead by 1-10 to 0-1. No, that’s not a misprint – it was 1-10 to 0-1. Spa notched up two more points before the break to leave us 1-10 to 0-3 ahead at half time.

But the home side dominated the second half, adding a further 2-7 to just three points for us – all three points coming from three Darragh O’Brien frees.

Team: Robbie Murphy, Colin Griffin, Barry Shanahan, Paul O’Sullivan, Jack O’Shea (0-1), Dylan Casey (Capt) (0-1), Adam Curran, Brendan O’Sullivan, Greg Horan (0-2), Michael O’Gara (1-0), Fiachna Mangan (0-1), Shane Walsh, Ferdia O’Brien (0-1), Michael O’Donnell, Shane O’Callaghan (0-1).

Subs: Darragh O’Brien (12m) (0-6 – five frees), David Fitzmaurice (35m), Shane Carroll (54m).

We now make a second trip to Killarney in a fortnight’s time (w/e 4th July) to play Dr. Crokes in round 3 of the Co. League. Then we have home games in our final two rounds of the League against John Mitchels and Kilcummin.

BEST WISHES: And mention of the O’Brien Footballers let us wish former Club Footballer, Ed O’Brien (father of Darragh and Ferdia) a long and healthy retirement as he steps down as Principal of Holy Family NS on this coming Friday. Ed, of course, was also the Principal of Derrymore NS until he came back into Tralee some years ago to take up the similar post in Holy Family.

B FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks B 2-11 (17); Moyvane 3-6 (15).

After our runaway win back in Killorglin last week in the opening round of the Co. League this tightly-fought game in Connolly Park on last Sunday afternoon (20th June) in round 2 of the competition was a much closer affair. It was a game that ebbed and flowed during the course of the hour with no more than four points separating the sides at different times and the sides level on five different occasions. Moyvane opened the scoring inside the 4th minute but a Shane Carroll free levelled matters after six minutes. Then by the 9th minute the visitors added a point and a goal before we added two points before the first water-break, one from play by Daniel O’Rourke and one from a forty five by Shane Carroll. This left Moyvane ahead by two at that stage (1-2 to 0-3).We slightly shaded the second quarter – our first goal coming in the 18th minute when Dean Scanlon’s perfect pass found Cian Purcell who netted brilliantly. We added three more points before half time – two by Conor Myers and another pointed free by Shane Carroll. Moyvane added 1-2 during this period to cut their lead to just one point at the half time break (2-4 to 1-6).

We then dominated the opening stages of the second half  – scoring 1-3 to 0-1 during this period to leave us four points ahead at the second water break (2-9 to 2-5). Our three points came from Gearóid Sheehan, Cian Purcell and another pointed free by Shane Carroll and a cracker of a goal by wing-back Rory Forbes. Then a goal and a point by Moyvane saw the sides level again after 50 minutes but in the closing minutes of the game two more pointed frees by Shane Carroll sealed the victory for us and put us on top of the League after our two round.

Team: Robbie Murphy, Ruairí O’Connell, Niall Fitzmaurice, John Murphy (Capt), Andrew Morrissey, Paul Galvin, Rory Forbes (1-0), Ciarán O’Connell, Eoghan Carroll, Daniel O’Rourke (0-1), Gearóid Sheehan (0-1), Dean Scanlon, Cian Purcell (1-1), Conor Myers (0-2), Shane Carroll (0-6 – four frees).

Subs: David Burke (ht), Calvin Foley (ht), Tom O’Farrell (54m).

We now travel to Kilgarvan on the weekend after next for a round 3 encounter.

THE C TEAM: Austin Stacks 3-5; Churchill 3-6.

With no competition completed last year and with only two games played during the whole season our C team were going into new territory on last Friday evening (18th June) in Connolly Park with the first ever playing in a District competition (The Tralee/St. Brendans District League) and after a very close contest the visitors eventually came out on top after a well-fought contest. The game was played with 13 a-side and at half time Churchill were ahead by three points (2-4 to 1-4). Our five scores came from five different players. David Courtney opened the scoring after two minutes followed by points from Cian Liston, Harry O’Callaghan and Keelan Pierce with our goal coming in the 17th minute from team captain, Kevin Barry.

Half way through the second half we had turned that score right around when we led by 3-5 to 2-5. Pa Mac pointed after just 30 second into the second half and our two goals came from David Courtney and Cian Liston. But we failed to score during the final quarter while Churchill added 1-1 to leave them with that narrow one point victory at the end. Still Team Manager Aidan O’Connor and his backroom team of Tommy O’Connor, Ricky Moloney, John Tobin, Eoin Broderick and Ger Mannix will be satisfied enough with the performance after such a long lay-off.

Team (13  a-side): Darragh O’Brien, Shane Greensmyth, Tom Crowley, No Number 4, Craig Teahan, Keelan Pierce (0-1), Kevin Barry (Capt) (1-0), Philip Quilter, Daniel Bohan, Harry O’Callaghan (0-1), Pa McCarthy (0-1), No Number 12, David Courtney (1-1), Cian Liston (1-1), James Charles.

Subs used: Jason Mitchel (18m), Conor Lowe (20m), Sam Nealon (35m).
