SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-14; Killarney Legion 0-8.

We began the defence of our Club Championship with a trip to Castleisland on Sunday last (5th Sept) and after a very solid display by the 15 who started and by the five subs who were introduced came home with a nine points victory.

When you dominate each quarter of the game that is usually an indication of how consistent our display was. And that’s exactly what happened. We scored four points to one in the first quarter, four points to two in the second quarter, three points to two in the third quarter and 1-3 to 0-3 in the final quarter.

After a measured build-up by both sides we opened the scoring in the 5th minute when corner back Jack O’Shea made his customary run up-field to score. This was followed a minute later when Kieran Donaghy put Brendan O’Sullivan through for our second.

Legion then opened their account in the 8thminute with a pointed free. Our 3rd score came in the 10th minute when a brilliant interception by Ronan Shanahan found Shane O’Callaghan, who was fouled and Seán Quilter made no mistake from the resultant free.

Our forth point came four minutes later when the O’Sullivan brothers combined for Brendan to put over his second of the afternoon. This left us four points to one ahead at the first water break.

Again we dominated the second quarter with Joseph O’Connor and Michael O’Gara lording the centre- great to see Joe making his first appearance of the season after a good campaign with Kerry during the NFL campaign but seeing no activity during the Championship.

Joe was one of our point scorers in this quarter along with a Seán Quilter free and two super points from play from Fiachna Mangan. Two more pointed frees from play by Legion left us five points clear at half time (0-8 to 0-3).

Again, during the 3rd quarter we outscored the opposition by three points to two, with Shane O’Callaghan on target twice, one each from play and a free and Seán Quilter also on target from a free. Legions two points also came from frees.

Legion opened the final quarter with a point from a forty five which meant that all their six scores up to then had come from placed ball. They did add two from play in the closing minutes of the game. By then we had added two more points, both from Darragh O’Brien, one each from a free and play.

Then in added time we made sure of victory with a second point from play from one of our corner backs, this time Colin Griffin on target and after the Legion keeper had made some good saves throughout the game there was no stopping Brendan O’Sullivan’s cracker for the only goal of the game.

So as we said at the start a great performance by all 20 who lined with one man really catching the eye, that was Armin Heinrich who was making his first Senior start (he did make his senior debut when coming on as a sub late in the Co. League game against Kilcummin at the start of August).

Armin was everywhere throughout the pitch linking up in almost every build-up during the hour and deservedly received the Celsius Mensware Man of the Match Award. It was also great to see Barry Shanahan making a late appearance in the game. Barry has been out of action since picking up that nasty injury early in the second half of the Crokes game in early July.

Team: Robbie Murphy, Colin Griffin (0-1), Dylan Casey (Capt), Jack O’Shea (0-1), Paul O’Sullivan, Ronan Shanahan, Conor Jordan, Joseph O’Connor (0-1), Michael O’Gara, Fiachna Mangan (0-2), Shane O’Callagahan (0-2 – one free), Armin Heinrich, Seán Quilter (0-3 frees), Kieran Donaghy, Brendan O’Sullivan (1-2).

Subs used: Michael O’Donnell (47m), Greg Horan (47m), Darragh O’Brien (53m) (0-2 – one free), Ciarán O’Reilly (60m), Barry Shanahan (61m).

The win entitles us to a home game in round 2 of the Championship and this will take place in Connolly Park, on Sunday next (12th Sept) at 2.30pm, against Kerins O’Rahillys who were defeated by Dingle in their opening round by 0-18 to 0-12.

SEPTEMBER IN THE PAST (01/09 to 07/09). On the field of play (4th Sept 1955) our Minor Hurlers made history when they won the Club’s first ever MH Co. Championship – defeating a fancied Ballyheigue side by 9-4 to 2-2.

Team: Moss Slattery, Dave Barry, Jimmy Murphy (Capt), Seán Quilter, George Foley, Christy McQuinn, Daithí O’Rourke, Brendan Dowling (1-0), Frank Tiernan (0-1), Seán O’Donnell (1-1), Jimmy Hayes (1-0), Dominic Foley (1-0), Johnny B. Brosnan, Tommy O’Keeffe (3-0), Tim Barrett (2-2). Sub used: Benny Hayes. Rest of Panel: John Barry, Brendan Cronin, Sammy O’Connor, Sean Farrell, Mike Quirke, Brendan Walsh. Selectors: Eddie Barry, Paddy Drummond, Joe Mulchinock, Dan Ryan.
