GOLF CLASSIC: Rockie golfers and supporters gathered in The Brogue Inn on Sunday evening for the launch of the 2022 Austin Stacks Golf Classic which takes place on Friday 25 th March in Tralee Golf Club.

Speaking at the launch, Austin Stacks Chairman Shane Lynch said that “The Rock has a long and storied history of golf fundraising events and this year’s edition promises to be our biggest yet.

As we emerge from Covid restrictions, the Golf Classic provides our fabulous supporters with a fantastic day out at the magnificent Barrow links course and an opportunity to celebrate our Senior Team’s hugely successful 2021 campaign which culminated in our 13th County Championship title and the return of the Bishop Moynihan Cup to the Rock”.

Shane remarked that this year’s Golf Classic is a hugely important part of Austin Stacks’ fundraising campaign to generate much-needed finances required for the club’s pitch upgrade programme and to alleviate the costs of the Senior Team’s County and Munster Championship campaigns.

He added: “like all GAA clubs, our fundraising capability was adversely impacted by the Pandemic and we now call on all our supporters and on keen golfers in the Kingdom and beyond to get behind this fabulous event and help Austin Stacks finance the next wave of development in the club”.

At the launch, which was attended by several of the County Championship winning team, Shane thanked the club’s Golf Classic committee who have worked tirelessly over the past number of months to make the event a reality, and also to Tralee Golf Club for hosting the event.

In addition to playing one of the best links courses in the world, teams of four will play for some fantastic prizes including a draw on the day for four All Ireland Football Final tickets.

Full details of the Austin Stacks Golf Classic are available on the club’s website at

SENIOR FOOTBALL: John Mitchels 0-4; Austin Stacks 0-3.

This opening round of the Tralee/St. Brendans League saw Mitchels win a low-scoring game on their home ground on last Sunday (20th Feb). It was a credit to both sides and referee Mike Hennessy to play the game at all, in the worst weather conditions ever witnessed – torrential rain and near gale-force wind all through. Both sides had a point each and a wide each during the first half. Conor Myers was our scorer from play.

Mitchels just shaded the second half, scoring three points to our two. Gearóid Sheehan scored our second point from play in the 42nd minute and our third and last score coming from a David Mannix free in the 55th minute.

Team: Wayne Guthrie (Capt),  Luke Chester, Barry Walsh, Ruairí O’Connell, Niall Fitzmaurice, Donagh McMahon, Eoghan Carroll, David Fitzmaurice, Dara Barry Walsh, Conor Horan, Gearóid Sheehan (0-1), Andrew Morrissey, Donagh McKivergan, David Mannix (0-1 free), Conor Myers (0-1).

Subs used: Calvin Foley (37m), Killian Litchfield (37m), Dean Rusk (40m), Tom O’Farrell (51m.

.In round 2 on next Sunday (27th Feb) we are at home to Ballymac (throw-in at 12.30pm) with the third and final round away to St. Pats on Sunday, 6th March. The two semi finals are fixed for the following weekend (12th/13th March) with no date yet fixed for the final.

And on football let us congratulate our four players who were on the Kerry U20 squad at the week-end – Adam Curran, Armin Heinrich, Joey Nagle and Jordan Kissane.

MINOR FOOTBALL: Our opening two rounds of the Town League, against Ardfert and Ballymac, fell foul of the inclement weather with the third round against Churchill also to be played.

In the meantime the Co. League fixtures have come to hand with the opening round fixed for this coming Saturday (26th Feb) with an away game against Keel/Listry at 4pm. We are also away in round 2 against Laune Rangers (12th March). Then we have home games in the remaining three rounds against Dr. Crokes (19th March), Kenmare Shamrocks (26th March) and Kilcummin (4th April). The League will conclude with two semi finals and a final.
