GOLF CLASSIC: Over 150 golfers enjoyed perfect conditions and summer-like weather on Friday at the 2022 Austin Stacks Golf Classic held in Tralee Golf Club’s prestigious Barrow course.

The scoring was as hot as the weather with some big points totals recorded throughout the day. A brilliant outward 53 points put the Davy team in the driving seat and they kept ahead of the chasing pack on the back 9 to record a best-of-the-day total of 100 points.

Congratulations to the winning team comprised of our former chairman Liam Lynch and the Kilkenny triumvirate of Matty Walsh, JJ Tobin & Joe Sweeney. 2nd prize went to the Danny Carroll Construction fourball with Charlie Irwin representing the team at the prize giving ceremony – and Charlie was back to the podium only minutes later as the winner of the Golf Classic Raffle run in association with the Kerry Hospice Foundation. Well done Charlie.

Thanks to all who participated and to our organizing committee who left no stone unturned in hosting the event. See Club Website for more details. Thanks to Elma Nix for the above report.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 5-6; Ballymac 1-10.

On a fine summer-like Sunday morning (27th March) in Connolly Park our Seniors made it two wins out of three in the last round robin game in the Tralee/St.Brendans League and thereby qualify for the semi final of the competition after a work-man like game against a good Ballymac side.

Cian Purcell’s super goal inside the 2nd minute gave us a lead which we never relinquished. This was followed in the 9th minute by a second goal – scored from a side-line ball by Gearóid Fitzgerald. However Ballymac were back in the game by the end of the first quarter when they cut our lead to one point (2-0 to 1-2) after two well-taken points and what turned out to be their only goal of the game. During the second quarter we added four more points to two for the opposition to leave us ahead by 2-4 to 1-4. Conor Myers with two from play and Dacid Mannix with one each from a free and play were our scorers.

We continued with our goal tally during the second half adding a further three (two by David Mannix and the other by Shane O’Callaghan). David and Calla were also the scorers of our two points during this half but all the 20 players that participated contributed in no small way to the result.

Team: Wayne Guthrie, Luke Chester, Barry Walsh, Niall Fitzmaurice, Dara Barry Walsh, Barry Shanahan, Eoghan Carroll, Michael O’Gara, Donagh McMahon, David Fitzmaurice, David Mannix (2-3 – one free), Gearóid Sheehan, Cian Purcell (1-0), Gearóid Fitzgerald (1-0), Conor Myers (0-2).

Subs used: Ronan Shanahan (ht), Shane O’Callaghan (38m) (1-1), Fiachna Mangan (38m), Ruairí O’Connell (44m), Calvin Foley (52).

We now travel to Kenmare on next Saturday evening (2nd April) to play Shamrocks in round 2 of the Co. League with a 6pm throw-in.

B FOOTBALL: We have a home game against Scartaglin in round 2 of the Co. League (Div. 4) which goes ahead in Connolly Park, also on next Saturday evening (2nd April) at 6pm.

THE C TEAM: Keel B 3-17; Austin Stacks 1-5.

Our C Team came up against a very strong Keel B team in Keel’s home venue on Saturday evening (26th March) in the opening round of the Co. League. Playing with the aid of a very strong breeze they outscored us by 0-13 to 0-1 at half time – our solitary score coming from a Jimmy Charles free in the 10th minute.

We did slightly better in the second half but the home side still outscored us by 3-4 to 1-4. We started well with a brilliantly taken goal by Cian Dillane inside five minutes. Also on target for us during that second period were Seamus Bastible with two points (one from a free) and a point each from play by Jimmy Charles and Evan Foley. The winning margin could have been bigger but for a number of brilliant saves throughout the hour by our keeper, Brian Horgan.

Team: Brian Horgan, Shane Greensmyth, Darren Bastible, James Quigley, Kevin Barry, Gearóid Kilgallen, Evan Foley (0-1), Enda Cahill, Cian Dillane (1-0), Dara Moriarty (Capt), Seamus Bastible (0-2 – one free), Daniel O’Rourke, Jimmy Charles (0-2 – one free), Gary Clifford, David Courtney.

Subs used: Joe Reidy (23m), Gavin Duffy (ht), Seán Collins (ht), Tommy Naughton (38m), Matthew Browne (42m), Eoin Muckian (45m), Dean O’Connell (48m).

We now have a home game in round 2 against Laune Rangers C in three weeks time. They had a high-scoring win in their opening round against Listry by 2-14 to 1-12 at the week-end.

MINOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-14; Kenmare Shamrocks 0-10.

With a draw against Keel/Listry in the opening round and a loss against Laune Rangers in round 2 our Minors had a very impressive seven points win in Connolly Park last Saturday evening (26th March) in the third game of the Co. League.

We now have two more rounds to play, both at home, against Dr. Crokes and Kilcummin.

KERRY IN NFL FINAL: With Kerry already through to the NFL Final the result of last Sunday’s round 7 game against Tyrone was academic. Still it was great to see Joseph O’Connor leading out the team as Kerry captain for the first time. And what a come-back Joe made from the very start – laying off that great pass for Kerry’s opening goal by Tony Brosnan.  Dylan Casey also started last Sunday and played well into the second half with Greg Horan and Jack O’Shea also on the panel.
