LIDL PROMO:  Our Ladies Club received great news last week with confirmation that they have earned a new set of Jersey’s through the Lidl Ireland Serious Support Campaign.  The Ladies Club intend to get an alternative jersey kit for use by our older girls/senior ladies teams.  This has been a serious club effort over many weeks and they wish to acknowledge the help received from the Boys’ Juvenile and Senior Men’s club in helping get them over the line.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 3-7 (16); An Ghaeltacht 0-12. (Report by Elma Nix)

A strong and piercing cold wind swept through Connolly Park this Sunday afternoon for the Div 1 Rd 3 clash between Austin Stacks and An Ghaeltacht.  The game was less than a minute old when Stacks opened their scoring with a well taken goal by full forward Gearóid Fitzgerald.  An Ghaeltacht responded with a point by Eanna O’Conchuir before Michael O’Gara netted for the home side once more. The wind was playing havoc and both sides were guilty of several wides from play.  An Ghaeltacht tacked on 6 more points before half time – scorers:  Tomas OSe, PJ Mac Laimh, Dara O’Se (3 – 2 frees) and Padraig O’Se.  While Stacks 3 points all came from play; David Mannix (0-2) and a beauty from Eoghan Carroll. HF score Austin Stacks 2-3 An Ghaeltacht 0-7.

Dara O’Se opened the 2nd half scoring for An Ghaeltacht and Stacks replied with a well taken free by David Mannix.  7 minutes into the 2nd half Stacks management made some substitutions Shane O’Callaghan replacing Eoghan Carroll, and Paul O’Sullivan coming on for David Fitzmaurice.  O’Gara pointed from play to give Stacks a three-point lead 8 minutes into the half; (2-5 to 0-8).  PJ Mac Laimh scored a very good point from play but Stacks restored their 3-point lead with a converted David Mannix free.  In the 21st minute of the 2nd half,  Ghaeltacht’s Dara O’Se  slotted over a free.  Stacks management again looked to their bench and made another double substitution; Gearoid Sheehan replacing Gearoid Ftizgerald and Luke Chester coming in for Niall Fitzmaurice.  Michael O’Donnell scored a beautiful point from a free kick to restore the Rockies 3-point lead with 5 minutes left on the clock.  Stacks introduced Brendan O’Sullivan for Michael O’Gara.  Then came the score of the game when a well worked move out of defence found Shane O’Callaghan dangerously close to goal, Calla unselfishly laid off the perfect pass to the incoming Cian Purcell, and the Stacks youngster duly punched the ball to the net to put 6 between the sides (3-7 to 0-10).  With time running out An Ghaeltacht had to be content with 2 more points, a free by Dara O’Se and a driving shot from distance by Riobeard O’Se which just sailed over the cross bar. Final Score Austin Stacks 3-7 An Ghaeltacht 0-12.

B FOOTBALL: Knocknagoshel 0-13; Austin Stacks 0-8.

We got off to a perfect start in this third round Co. League game played away from home on this Sunday afternoon (10th April) with Barry Shanahan winning the throw-in and finding Donagh McKivergan who was fouled and after just thirty five seconds Darragh O’Brien pointed the resultant free. Playing with the aid of an almost gale-force wind the home side added four points (three from frees) before we added a second inside the 14thminute from another Darragh O’Brien free after a foul on John Carmody who had a brilliant game throughout.

We had a very good second quarter with both sides adding three points each – two of ours coming from play by Killian Litchfield and Donagh McKivergan and the third from another Darragh O’Brien free after he himself was fouled. This left us just two points behind at the break (0-7 to 0-5).

A slow second-half start by both sides saw the first score coming after eight minutes for Knocknagoshel, followed by a further two quick points by the home side inside the 40th minute. We then got into the game, adding three quick points ourselves, all from played in a three-minute spell (44th to 46th). But that was as good as it got for us. We went scoreless during the final quarter while the home side added a further three points to give them a comfortable five points win at the end.

SYMPATHY: All in the Club were saddened to learn of the passing of Alice Naughton (nee Trant), St. Brendan’s Park. Alice and her family were, and still are, steeped in Rock history. She was predeceased by her husband Tom in May 1995 who was one of the great Club and Kerry supporters of his day; and by her son John Joe in December 2012 who was member of the Stacks MF Team in 1969 when they won their 1st MF Co. Championship; and by her son Tommy in April 2014 who also played with the Club. Her daughter Anne (Slattery) played Ladies Football with the Club and with Kerry. Today her grandson, Tommy, who was also a Club player, has been part of our SF Management team for many years. We extend sincere sympathy to Doreen, Anne, Helen and Jeremiah and to all of Alice’s extended family and friends.

The Club also extends sincere sympathy to the family of the young Sligo footballer, Red Óg Murphy and to his colleagues in his Curry GAA Club, who died suddenly last Friday, aged 21.

Sincere sympathy is also offered the families of the following who died recently: Margaret King (nee Hennebery), ‘Springmount’, Clash (sister of Joe and aunt of David and Paul, former Club Footballers); Jose Alvin Guardiano, Manor Village; John Fitzgerald, Blennerville, Lohercannon and England; Tom Lyons, Laccabeg, Abbeydorney (a regular member of our Card Sessions and a former Abbeydorney Hurler, a member of that winning Co. Championship SH team in 1974, defeating a very good Rock team in the Final); John (Sonny) Barron, Meadowlands Estate; Gabriel (Gaye) Dowling (nee Costello), Caherina; Gerald McKenna, Ballyduff (former Chairman of the Kerry Co. Board and delegate to the GAA Central Council); Thomas Stack, Caherslee and late of Banna; William (Willie) Seeler, Stack’s Villas, another one of the great Stacks supporters and brother of former Club footballer, the late Michael (Ikey); Sheila O’Donoghue (nee O’Meara), Muckross  (twin sister of the recently deceased Eileen Finn, and aunt of former Club Footballer, Mike Finn); and Anne (Patsy) Lynch (nee Landers), Killeen Road.
