SENIOR FOOTBALL: Feale Rangers 1-12; Austin Stacks 0-12 (aet).

The first Co. Championship quarter final of the weekend, played in Austin Stack Park on Saturday evening (8th Oct) had to go to extra time after the sides were level on nine points each at the end of normal time. At the beginning Rangers had raced into an early lead with two points inside the first six minutes. With good defensive play after that we held them scoreless coming right up to half time while adding four points ourselves during that period – all from play. Shane O’Callaghan opened our account in the eight minute and that was followed by two super points from Conor Horan and team captain, Michael O’Donnell. Our fourth came in the 23rd minute when Shane was again on target after a super ball in by David Mannix. Both sides had a point each in the closing minutes of the half – ours coming from a long-distance free by goalkeeper, Wayne Guthrie. This left us two ahead at the break (0-5 to 0-3).

Rangers got more into the game during the second half and outscored us by six points to four. Two of our four came from Michael O’Donnell with one each coming from Seán Quilter and Greg Horan.

We were held scoreless during the first half of extra time while Rangers added a goal and a point.

We put up a better show during the second half, scoring a further three points (two by Sean Quilter and one by Armin Heinrich) to two by the Listowel boys, but it was too little, too late for us.

Team: Wayne Guthrie (0-1 free), Colin Griffin, Jack O’Shea, Ronan Shanahan, Greg Horan (0-1), Conor Jordan, Paul O’Sullivan, Michael O’Donnell (Capt) (0-3 – one free), Barry Shanahan, Armin Heinrich (0-1), Michael O’Gara, Conor Horan (0-1), Shane O’Callaghan (0-2), Adam Curran, David Mannix.

Subs used: Seán Quilter (42m) (0-3 – one free), Kieran Donaghy (42m), Fiachna Mangan (54m), Barry Walsh (et), Eoghan Carroll (70m), Gearóid Fitzgerald (70m).

After the game news broke that Wayne Quillinan is about to be appointed Manager of the Kerry MF team for the coming season – Stacks loss will definitely be Kerry’s gain. Wayne gave an outstanding eight seasons (2000-2007) playing with the Senior team. Then two years later he became Team Manager for a four year stent (2009 to 2012). This was followed by another five seasons (2018 to 2022) which is now about to come to an end. Well done Wayne for such a glittering career, so far, and the best of luck in the Kerry job.

SF CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: With this season’s Club Championship divided into two Groups of 4 there will now be a Relegation play-off between the two teams who finished bottom in their respective Groups, that’s Kenmare Shamrocks and ourselves.
