SENIOR FOOTBALL: South Kerry 1-13; Austin Stacks 1-13 (aet).

With extra time and additional time this round 2A Co. Championship encounter, played in the sunshine of Con Keating Park, Cahersiveen on this Sunday afternoon (22nd May), saw 90 minutes of very entertaining football for the sizeable attendance. A game which started on the dot of 2.30 was eventually brought to an end at 4.28pm by referee Eddie Walsh (Rathmore) and the sides will have to do it all over again next Saturday (28th May).

South Kerry looked as if they would confirm their favourites tag at half time in normal time when they led by six points (1-8 to 0-5). David Mannix with four points (one from play) and a Pa McCarthy one from play were our first half scorers. The South Kerry goal came in the 25th minute.

But a solid performance by our lads in the second half, aided by the introduction of Kieran Donaghy, saw the sides level at the end of normal time (1-10 each). In that second half we held the opposition to just one point from play (they added a second from a free) while we went on to score 1-5. Our crucial score came in the 41st minute with Seán Ryan and Star putting David Mannix through, who slotted the ball low to the net. David also added two more points (one from a free) with Conor Jordon opening the second half scoring and team captain, Wayne Guthrie also putting over from play. The equalizing point came in the 60th minute from Shane O’Callaghan after a perfect ball in by Pa McCarthy, leaving both sides on 1-10 each.

Just over a minute into extra time we went ahead for the first time in the game when David Mannix converted following a foul on Seán Ryan and we still had that point to spare at the break in extra time after both sides had a further point each – David Mannix again on target for us from a free.

Twenty six second into the final half of the game Wayne Guthrie put us two up. But two minutes later the home side pulled one back with a Bryan Sheehan free and it was Bryan again from a free, deep in added time (four minutes and ten seconds to be precise), who put over the equalizing point to send the game to a replay.

JACKIE POWER: In this year of centenary celebrations we, in the Club, remember one of the all time greats of Gaelic Games – the late legendary Jackie Power Senior, who was born 100 years ago next Monday. Jackie was born in Annacotty (Limerick) on the 30th May 1916 and came to prominence as a dual player with his Club, Ahane and Limerick.

With  Ahane he won a staggering 15 SH Co. Championship titles and five in a row SF Co. Championship titles (1935-1939). He won a Munster JF Championship medal with Limerick in 1939, defeating Kerry in the Final by 1-7 to 1-2.He was a member of the Limerick SH team from 1934 to 1949, winning two All Ireland Finals in 1936 and 1940 and winning five NHL titles in a row from 1934 to 1938.

In addition he won 7 Railway Cup Hurling medals with Munster. Thirty three years were to elapse before Limerick won their next All Ireland title in 1973 (they haven’t won one since then) and Jackie was Manager of that team.  That was on 2nd September.

A mere seven weeks later, on the 21st October 1973, Jackie was to bridge an even longer gap when he managed the Rock SF team to win the Kerry Co. Championship after 37 years of waiting. He also trained the Kerry Hurlers to win the All Ireland JH Final in 1961 – their first title at national level in 70 years. In 1991 he won the All Time All Star Award for services to the GAA.
