Austin Stacks CrestSENIOR FOOTBALL: Killarney Legion  0-9; Austin Stacks 1-8.

After a rather fractious affair our Seniors got back to winning ways in glorious sunshine at Derreen on last Saturday evening (4th June) in round 4 of the Co. League.

After twenty minutes we had a lead of 1-4 to 0-1 when a straight red card reduced us to 14 men. Three points by team captain, Shane O’Callaghan and a goal and a point (free) by David Mannix were our scorers at that stage, and before half time Darragh O’Brien added another to leave us ahead by 1-5 to 0-1 at the break.

Twelve minutes into the second half we lost another player to a second yellow and with seven minutes to go we were down to twelve men after a third player received a second yellow. This of course did have an effect on the game, as the opposition out-scored us by 0-8 to 0-3 during this half and we could have gone behind at one stage but for a brilliant save by keeper, Darragh O’Brien. But we held out for a well-deserved two points victory. Our three second half points came from Shane O’Callaghan (2) and Darragh O’Brien.

It was good to see some experienced players making their first starts of the season  – John Dennis, Mikey Collins and Darragh O’Brien (all three had been introduced as subs in recent games) and good too to see Barry Shanahan and Brían Mangan on the starting 15.  And finally it was good to see Greg Horan back on the sideline after his operation last week.

Team: Darragh O’Brien, Fearghal MacNamara, Ronan Shanahan, John Dennis, Pa McCarthy, Jack O’Shea, Conor Jordan, Brían Mangan, Barry Shanahan, Daniel Bohan, Shane O’Callaghan (Capt) (0-5 – one free), Mikey Collins, David Mannix (1-1 – one free), David O’Sullivan, Darragh O’Brien (0-2).

Subs used: Fiachna Mangan (30+1m), Seán Ryan (40m-58m blood sub – full sub at 59m); Barry Walsh (51m).

The week-end results leave Dr. Crokes and newly-promoted Templenoe on full points (eight) after the first four rounds – with Dingle, Kerins O’Rahillys and ourselves coming next on six points each.  The round 5 game between ourselves and Rahillys, originally fixed for next week-end, will take place at a later date as both teams will be involved in the Mick O’Dwyer Tournament at the week-end (see next item).

THE MICK O’DWYER PERPETUAL TROPHY TOURNAMENT; takes place in South Kerry at the weekend to celebrate the 80th birthday of one of the greatest footballers/team managers of all time. Micko turns a young looking 80 on this Thursday (9th June) and we all wish you a very happy birthday Micko and thank you and your organizing committee for your kind invitation to participate in the tournament, along with seven other teams.

The four quarter finals and two semi finals will take place on Saturday at Waterville and Dromid. Quarter finals one and two at 11am (we play St. Marys in Dromid in one of these), with the third and fourth quarters at 12.30pm.
