B FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 3-10; John Mitchels 0-5.

Our B Team regained their Town League title which they last held two seasons ago (champions last time in 2014) with a good win over an understrength Mitchels team at the Mitchels Complex on last Friday night (7th Oct). Alan Duggan opened the scoring after a minute but the home side looked impressive early on and led by two points to one inside five minutes. But once we went ahead again in the 13th minute with points from Alan Nestor and team captain, Seamus Bastible we were never headed again.
The next score really put us in the driving seat – a super goal by Shane Guthrie in the 16th minute – followed by points from Alan Duggan, Sean Dukes and Dylan Harnett and a second goal on the stroke of half time when Denis McElligott put Alan Nestor through. We led by 2-6 to 0-3 at the break.

If Mitchels harboured any intentions of a comeback they were certainly put to bed straight after the resumption. Denis O’Neill won the throw-in, found Alan Nestor who passed to the onrushing Darragh Scanlon (just on the pitch as a second-half substitute) and Darragh blasted the net after just ten seconds of play – which has to be one of the quickest goals scored on any pitch in any grade throughout the country in any year.

With a job well done we eased up somewhat and for the remainder of the game scored a further four points to two for the opposition. Three of those points came from Ronan Shanahan, who had number 4 on his back but this has never stopped Ronan from ending up in the forwards. Alan Nestor, who also had a great game scored the other point of this half.
It was good to see Denis McElligott back on the field of play again after his recent period away.

Team: Martin Moriarty, John Murphy, Barry Walsh, Ronan Shanahan (0-3), Paul Galvin, Denis McElligott, Dylan Harnett (0-1), Denis O’Neill, Shane Guthrie (1-0), Shane Crowley, Seamus Bastible (Capt) (0-1), Seán Dukes (0-1), Alan Duggan (0-2), Alan Nestor (1-2), Dale Counihan.

Subs used: John Dennis (20m), Darragh Scanlon (ht) (1-0), Cathal O’Reilly (36m), Declan Clifford (39m), Eoin Galvin (45m).

So with the season now completed, team Mentors Richie Conway, Jonathan Magnier and William Kirby, ably assisted during the season at one stage or another, by John Dennis, Eoin Colgan and Club Chairman, Liam Lynch, will be reasonably pleased with the season. Most will know that if this team could field its optimum 15 every week then not alone would we win the Town League every year but we would also win the Co. League and the Molyneaux Cup (Co. Championship) as well. Of the 16 games played this season we won 8 and lost 8 and gave game time to 60 players. One of those players ironically played his last game of the season when we played Mitchels in round 2 of the Town League on the 11th July last. That was Brían Mangan, who was having a great season up to then, and who picked up an injury in that game which has sidelined him since then. We hope that Brían and indeed all the other 59 players will be back with us again next year – our centenary year.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Our hopes of representing the County in the forthcoming Munster Club Championship are still alive – for another few days at least – after Kenmare’s victory last Sunday. They now play firm favourites, Dr. Crokes in this coming Sunday’s (16th Oct) Co. Final and, of course, all in the Rock wish Kenmare the best of luck in what will be a repeat of the 1987 Final which Kenmare won after a replay.
In the meantime we must focus our minds on next Saturday’s (15th Oct) Town Championship semi final against Kerins O’Rahillys which goes ahead in Connolly Park at 5pm. The winners will play Ballymac in the Final of the competition which, at the moment, is fixed for Sunday week (23rd Oct).

HURLING: The South Kerry SH Championship Final between ourselves and Kilgarvan is also fixed for next Saturday (15th Oct) at 4pm. Originally fixed for Fitzgerald Stadium we now understand that an alternative venue will be fixed for the game. Check the Club Website for updates.
We also await a date to be confirmed for the SH Co. League (Div 3) Final between ourselves and Duagh which will take place in Connolly Park.

BINGO: continues in our Clubhouse, Connolly Park, on this and every Saturday night, commencing at 8.30pm.

CLUBHOUSE: As always the Clubhouse is available for all types of Parties. For Bookings, phone Maurice McNamara at 086 3747 642.

CARDS: The 45 Card Sessions will continue in the Clubhouse on every Monday and Thursday nights, commencing at 9.30pm each night.

LOTTO: Last week’s (3rd Oct) Jackpot, worth €5,000, was not won. The numbers drawn were 1, 14, 29, 30.
The €20 Winners were: Jackie and Noreen Power, both c/o The Ladies; Chrissie O’Brien, c/o John Gentleman; Denis O’Connor, c/o The Club; and Michael Hickey, c/o Club Rockies..
