MAURICE COLLINS RIP: Family, friends and colleagues were shocked and saddened to learn last Tuesday evening of the sudden death of Maurice Collins – former Team Mentor and father of current Club Footballer, Mikey and former Club Footballers, Máiréad and Bríd and father-in-law of former Club Hurler, Finbarr Canty.

For many years , with many teams, Maurice was a Club team Mentor, starting with the U11 team in 1992 who won the prestigious Dee O’Leary Tournament at Na Piarsaigh Club (Cork) and ending, 14 years later, when he was part of the 2006 SF Management team.

Two of his co-selectors for most of that period included John Joe Sugrue (still a selector with today’s SF team) and Denny Long (former Club Football and Club Chairman).

In the nineties and early noughties those Juvenile teams were some of the most successful teams in the Club’s history, winning almost every competition in which they participated.

In 1999, at Minor level, they came within a whisker of winning the Co. Championship – going down to an eight Club Divisional side (South Kerry) by just one point. Three years later, when that team won the 2002 U21 Co. Championship, Maurice was still involved in the team’s management, along with John Joe and Denny and also Jackie Power). His final year in a great career of mentoring Club teams was with the Senior team during the 2006 season.

We extend sincere sympathy to Maurice’s wife Delia, his son Mikey, daughters Máiréad and Bríd and to all his extended family and friends.

JERRY DENNEHY RIP: All in the Club and the wider community were saddened to learn of the death of former Club Footballer and Hurler, Jerry Dennehy at the weekend.

Jerry’s first success at Club level came in 1967 with the winning of the MH Co. Championship. He lined out at wing back on that team which was littered with stars of the future (Conall Fanning, Tommy Hannafin, Joe Reidy, Billy Ryle, Jerry Dennehy, Mike McCarthy, Jimmy Diggins, Dick Spring, Timmy Sheehan, Mikey Sugrue, Paudie McCarthy, John Lenihan, Larry Noonan, Lal Collins, Jackie Power. Subs used: John O’Keeffe, Tony O’Keeffe. Rest of panel: Ger  O’Keeffe, John Crean, Mike Barry, Seán O’Callaghan and Tommy Kennington).

The following year Jerry made his SF Championship debut and was our regular goalkeeper for the next three seasons (1968-1970). During the same years he also lined out in goals for the Kerry U21F team, winning a Munster Championship title in 1968 with a win over Clare in the final.

We extend sincere sympathy to Jerry’s partner, Peggy; his daughter Jennifer; and brother and sister, Denis and Noreen.

SYMPATHY: Sincere sympathy is also offered to the families of the following who died recently – Maura Brick (nee Browne), Caherbreagh and late of Ballymullen; Johanna (Joanie) O’Shea, London and late of Casement’s Avenue and Shanakill; Mary Walsh (nee O’Callaghan), Rock Street and Casement’s Avenue; and Nora Travi (nee Brosnan-Butcher), Shanakill and late of Mountcollins.

HURLING: When some of us thought that our Hurling season was over, along comes fixtures for the Junior B Munster Hurling Championship. Like last year, the fixtures are to be staged at the Killeedy Club in the village of Raheenagh  in West Limerick.

Our first round (quarter final) tie is fixed for Sunday, 20th November against the Cork JH B Champions, Whitechurch. Throw in at 12.45pm. This will be followed by quarter final no. 2 at 2.30 between Wolfe Tones (Clare) and the Limerick Champions. The semi finals are fixed for a fortnight later (4th Dec) with the winners of quarter final 1 playing the Waterford Champions and the second semi final between the quarter final 2 winners playing the Tipperary Champions. The Limerick, Tipp. and Waterford Champions have yet to be determined.

MIKE O’HALLORAN: Most of us know by now that, not alone is Team Manager Mike O’Halloran a dab hand at managing Hurling teams, he is also a Hurling Commentator with Radio Kerry and now a Playwright as well.

His latest Play (A Queens Speech) is a delightful blend of comedy and drama set in the summer of 2011. The Play goes ahead for three nights in St. John’s Theatre, Listowel on this coming weekend (Fri, Sat, Sun – 4th, 5th, 6th Nov at 8pm).  Booking at 068 22566.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Our last game of a busy season is fixed for Saturday 19th November at Lewis Road when we play Dr. Crokes in the Co. League Final. This will be the 3rd season in row when both Clubs will have met in the final. We came out winners in 2014 – winning by 2-9 to 0-13, while Crokes won the 2015 encounter by 3-15 to 3-9. As in the SF Championship we head the Roll of Honours also at Co. League (Div 1) level. We have 10 titles with Laune Rangers one behind on 9, while Crokes are in 3rd spot with 7 titles.

Signings will also take place in Killarney (Easons – 5th Nov), Listowel (Easons – 19th Nov), Dingle (Garveys – 26th Nov) and back in Tralee at O’Mahony’s Bookshop on 10th December. All signings begin at 12 noon.

WELL DONE: to David Mannix who came second in the overall scoring table in this season’s SF Co. Championship, even though we only got as far as the quarter final stage. How far ahead would David have been if we had reached the Final.

MINOR FOOTBALL: is (or was) back on the agenda again with the Central League to be concluded. We had a semi final match down for decision on this Saturday (5th Nov) against either Laune Rangers or Na Gaeil who were to play against one another last Saturday. But looking at the Laune Rangers Notes they were also due to play Milltown in the Mid Kerry Championship on the same afternoon and, as we write, there is no confirmation as to what comes next.
