HURLING: The Hurling season has indeed come to an end as our squad have decided not to participate in the forthcoming Junior B Munster Hurling Championship. With some space in this week’s Notes we will reflect briefly, in our next item, on what has been a great season for our Hurlers.

2016 HURLING: In the context of titles won our Hurlers had one of their most successful seasons in years. Of the five competitions in which they participated they won four. At County level they won the JH Championship and the SH League (Div 3). At District Board level (South Kerry Hurling Board) they won the JH Championship and League.

The only title they lost was the South Kerry SH Championship when Kilgarvan defeated them in the Final. So there probably is truth in the rumour that Team Captain, Andrew Foley, had to add a small extension to his house in order to accommodate all the trophies won.

In total they played nine games during the season (they also received a walk-over in another game). Ronan Gilsenan and Kevin O’Leary were the only two to line out in all nine games. Just behind them, with eight games played, were Ciarán Breen, Andrew Foley, Andrew Morrissey and Peter O’Regan.

Colm Ó Giollagáin topped the scoring stats as he did in his inaugural season last year. In the seven games he played this year he scored 6-33 (51pts) as against a score of 12-40 (76 pts) in 9 games played last year. A total of 30 different players lined out in those nine games with no less than seven new players making their Hurling debuts – Robert Byrne, Eamon Browne, Johnny Downey, Rory Forbes, Eoghan McKivergan, Ian Moynihan and Killian O’Riordan.

Even though a number of teams had to withdraw due to their involvement in their own domestic competitions, nonetheless, the Trevor Barrett Tournament was another outstanding success. A Causeway/Dr. Crokes combination won the Tournament, just defeating our lads in the Final by one point (2-6 to 2-5).

So a very pleasing season for Team Mentors Mike O’Halloran and Michael O’Leary who were ably assisted in their backroom duties during the year by many members of the playing squad, including Ronan Gilsenan, Danny Maguire, Andrew Morrissey, Peter O’Regan, Paul Daly and Ger Scollard to name but a few.

MINOR FOOTBALL: The Central League Final, between ourselves and Kerins O’Rahillys, has been fixed for this Friday night (11th Nov) with the time and venue still to be fixed as we write.

Our path to the final saw us with good wins over Dingle (1-14 to 1-9) and Laune Rangers (3-12 to 0-9) and two walk-overs also. That last game, against LR, was played on the 21st of July, that’s 16 weeks ago.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: The Co. Board has confirmed again that the Co. League Final between ourselves and Dr. Crokes will go ahead as scheduled in Lewis on Saturday week (19th Nov). This seems to be regardless Crokes’ progress in the Munster Club Championship.
