FADÓ FADÓ – 1917: The senior hurling All-Ireland was won by Dublin- Baile Átha Cliath: 5-4; Tipp: 4-2. The senior football All-Ireland was won by Wexford- Loch Garman: 0-9; An Clár: 0-5. Jack Lynch, Cork hurler and footballer and later Taoiseach, was born. ‘A Girl of Glenbeigh’, an early feature film made in Ireland, starring Kathleen O’Connor, was made by the Film Company of Ireland.

The poems of Francis Ledwidge, who died in WW1, ‘Songs of Peace’ were published posthumously. Thomas Ashe, who took part in the Easter Rising (Ashbourne, Co. Meath), died following forcible feeding while on hunger strike.

Richard McElligott, in ‘Forging a Kingdom: The GAA in Kerry 1884-1934’, tells us that from the end of the 19th century, around the world and in Ireland, far more people have been involved in sporting activities than ever were in political parties or revolutionary bodies. A lot more people in the last 100 years, and beyond, have more sport in their daily lives than any interaction with politics or governments or revolutionary organizations.”

At a meeting after the Easter Rising, the Central Council of the GAA released a public statement emphasising the association’s “strictly non-political and non-sectarian nature.” The GAA was and is cautious in its public associations and that is a stance that groups such as the GPA should respect. 2017 = Bliain na Carraige! Cá bhfios? Who knows!
