AGM: Our juvenile Cruinniú Cinn Bhliana (Annual General Meeting) will take place at 7pm on Tuesday January 8th in Connolly Park. Fáilte roimh chách.

SCÓR na nÓG: (i) Our singer, Ella Nic Gabhann, sang beautifully in the Kerry Scór na nÓg final and came a very creditable second….tá sí beagnach ag an mbarr…céim amháin eile! However, the victory went to Sneem. Well done, Ella, on a great performance and a good result! Other results: Grúpa Ceoil…Fionnúig (Blennerville also performed well in this competition); Bailéadghrúpa…Gleann Fleisce (Club Naomh Pádraig were so close); Léiriú…Na Gaeil; Aithriseoireacht…Keel; Set/Figure Dance…An Spá. (ii) Our club’s 4-person quiz team will be in action at 7pm on Friday 18thJanuary in Currans (in Ionad Barr Feabhais na gCoirríní). The Kerry quiz victors will go directly to the All-Ireland final agus beidh sin ar siúl i Mí Feabhra i gCaisleán an Bharraigh i gContae Mhaigh Eo.

CORN UÍ MHUIRÍ: (i) The Green lads look forward to their Munster quarter final game v Coláiste Bhréanainn, Cill Airne, on 16th January. The Rock players on The Green team: Seán Cuiltéir, Conchúr Ó Mír, Eoin Ó Cearúill, Dónal Ó Ruairc, Tomás Ó Fearaíl, Ben Cuiltéir, Jordan Ó Cíosáin, Armin Heinrick. (ii) Our sympathies to the footballers of Mercy Mounthawk who have exited the U18+ competition. Buachaillí na Carraige ar an bpainéal: Adam Ó Curráin, Séamus Ó Coigligh, Dara de Barra-Breathnach, Pádraig Ó Lionnáin, Craig Ó Tíocháin, Donncha Mac Mathúna, Mícheál Ó Gadhra.

40 BLIAIN: Congrats to Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn on being 40 years on the road. Comhghairdeachas leis na leanaí agus leis na múinteoirí a chuir an-thaispeántas ceoil, amhránaíochta, filíochta agus cainte os comhair an domhain mhóir trí Raidió na Gaeltachta an tseachtain seo caite. I measc na gcainteoirí bhí Ruairí Ó Loingsigh who wasn’t shy about telling the listeners on the www that his total allegience is to the Black’n’Amber of The Rock!

MULLACH AN LEACHTA: Mullach an Leachta (anglicised as meaningless and hard to pronounce ‘Mullanalaghta’) is half a parish in the northeastern part of County Longford. The correct translation of its name is ‘Hill of the Grave-mound (or Standing Stone or Gravestone).’ The club’s patron is Naomh Columba.

Lough Gowna, a great fishing lake, is at its western side and the River Eirne is its northern boundary. The other half of the parish, Scrabby (Screabach), is in County Cavan and in Ulster. Over 3,200 people lived in Mullach an Leachta before the Great Famine (1845-48) but now it has less than 500 people.

Having defeated Kilmacud – Na Crócaigh (a club with a membership of over 4,000) to gain a place in the All-Ireland semi-final, they’ll have to face the might of another Croke Club….Crócaigh Chill Airne! Gaelic football, ní nach ionadh, is the main sport in the area. Bunaíodh an club sa bhliain 1889….tá sé 129 bliain d’aois. Maroon and white are its colours.

The club was successful in the 1940s and 1950s and won county titles in ’48 and ‘50. It has come to prominence again in recent years, winning the senior championship and league in 2016, 2017 and 2018…three-in-a-row…a remarkable achievement for an area with such a small population.

They are now senior champions of Leinster, the first ever Longford club to be in that position. The All-Ireland club semi-final is a game to which all GAA followers look forward. A Chrócaigh Chill Airne, bígí an-aireach!! (The late country music singer, Larry Cunningham, was a native of the ‘Hill of the Grave-mound’).
