PEIL FAOI 6: The Under 6 boys played great football in Caherslee last Sunday. We hope to see more of the same energy, skill, excitement and enjoyment on Sunday morning next, August 2nd, in Caherslee. Fáilte roimh imreoirí nua.
PEIL FAOI 8: (i) Our under 8 boys were also training in Caherslee last Sunday and they had a great time kicking ball between 11am and 12.00. We hope to see everybody in action again next Sunday, August 2nd, in Caherslee. (ii) Thursday night training for our U8 boys recommences this week at 6pm in Caherslee.
PEIL FAOI 10: (i) Our U10 lads were in action in Caherslee on Sunday last. This Sunday (2ú Lúnasa), however, we’ll travel to Cillín to play v Na Gaeil in a challenge game. See you all, boys, in Killeen, Oakpark. Up the ‘Black‘n’Amber’! (ii) Under 10 Thursday night training recommences this week at 5.45pm in Caherslee.
CAID FAOI 12: (i) Our U12 charges were in action on Sunday evening in Round 2 of the LEE STRAND County League: (a) The ‘Black’ Team headed west to take on Castlegregory in their second Group K match. As our hosts had a resounding win over Dingle in Round 1, our travelling party knew that they were in for a tough challenge from the Caisleán boys who started the game with great purpose and with a salvo of early goals. Our young side started to settle into matters in the 2nd quarter and strong performances from Jamie Casey and Dean Courtney in defence and from Dennis Brassil and Oran O’Donoghue in attack led to a more competitive contest as the game wore on.
The Caisleán Ghriaire lads were that bit stronger throughout, however, and finished on a winning scoreline of 5-16 to 2-12. The travelling Rockie support was rightly proud of a brave display in difficult conditions by the young Rock boys and hopes will be high for a close game v Dingle at home in Connolly Park next Sunday. (b) Back at Connolly Park headquarters, Team 1 took on Churchill ‘A’. In this encounter, Churchill edged ahead in a tight first half and led 0-8 to 0-7 at the break. Hopes were high in the Rockie camp at halftime that we could push on for a much-needed victory but a well-worked team goal by the Churchill buachaillí had us under pressure from the restart. Despite great defending by our back unit and tireless work out the field, we couldn’t hold out against the opposition’s fluid attack and Churchill ran out deserving winners on a scoreline of 2-18 to 1-8. (c) Also at Connolly Park, the ‘Amber’ Team took on Churchill ‘B’.
In this match, our young Rockie outfit (13 of the 14 who togged out are under 11 years of age) built on their promising league debut v Listowel to push a good Churchill team all the way in a close and most entertaining game. Our boys, on the home turf, recovered from a slow start to improve in every line of the team and, powered by a man of the match performance by David Hobbert i lár na páirce, the ‘Amber’ boys matched an older and physically stronger Churchill team in many facets of play.
On this occasion, Churchill managed to hold onto their early lead and won out on a score of 4-10 to 2-7. But the scoreline doesn’t fully reflect a most encouraging performance from our very young talented side and these boys will surely see their courageous efforts rewarded with more positive results in the weeks to come.
(ii) The final round of the current phase of the County League will be played this coming bank holiday weekend: (a) Team 1 will take on our great local John Mitchel Club rivals at the Ballyseedy complex. Our Rock boys will have learned from their Listowel game and will give a good account of themselves. We expect great football from Gabriel Nosidlak, Rory Lynch, Jack Diggins, Aodhán Horgan, Jake Carmody, Ciarán Skinner, Jay Sweeney, Jack Shanahan, Rory Kavanagh, Alex Relihan, Eoghan Murphy, Jayden Moriarty, Rian Walsh, Alex Tuohy and Tadhg Falvey.
(b) The ‘Amber’ Team will take on the John Mitchel Club B Team in Ballyseedy. The following lads will not be found wanting in this encounter: Oisín Cotter, Fionn Cotter, Eoghan Mangan, David Hobbert, Alex Darfoor, Matthew Guerin, Joe Barry, Harry Murphy, Killian Coffey, Ryan O’Carroll, Seán McCannon, Rian McEvoy, Michael Cotter, Jack Walsh. (c) Our ‘Black’ Team will entertain Dingle at home in our own Connolly Park. We can expect to see great football being played by such players as Adam Johnston, Jamie Casey, Kyle Yoxhall, Brian Kavanagh, Dean Courtney, Dennis Brassil, Max Grzybowski, Seanie Clifford, Oran O’Donoghue, Barry Laide, Luke O’Connor, Darragh Lyons, Harry Neale and Ewan Canty. Full match details will be confirmed to parents during the coming week. Up The Rock! (iii) Training: training will again take place in Connolly Park at 5.30pm on Tuesday and at 6.30pm on Thursday.

PEIL FAOI 14: (i) New U14 training times in Connolly Park: Fridays at 6pm and Sundays at 4pm. (ii) This week’s A game: our U14A Boys will play their County League game v Ardfert on Wednesday at 7pm in Connolly Park. (iii) This week’s B game: the U14B Boys are scheduled to play their County League game v Firies B on Wednesday at 7pm in Firies.
(iv) Having completed their hard training, our B team played a pre-competition challenge match v Club Naomh Pádraig. The game was played on a fine night and on a perfect surface in Blennerville. The squad of 15, captained by Ryan McMahon, produced a highly competitive performance and displayed much of what’s expected from Rock footballers….tight marking, tigerish effort and fluid catch and kick football. With no substitutes on call the full 15 players were required to produce a great team effort! They were driven on by the tireless and effective play of Jake O’Connor; he led by example in fielding, in tracking and in dictating play….and also chipped in with 4 points. The full-back line of Conor Galvin, Tomás O’Connell and Brendan Maunsell was solid despite all that was thrown at them and were the rock on which this performance was built. The half back line of Barry Nagle, who won a mountain of ball and distributed brilliantly, Liam O’Connell, who continuously drove forward, and Bao Foley, who gave an exhibition of disciplined defending, were on the St. Pat’s danger men all evening and came out on top every time.
The forward lines were marshalled from centre forward by Cormac Bastible and he dictated the pace of the play with precision foot-passing and strong ball-winning ability. Both Jerry Lynch and Naode Derege scored from the wings and worked tirelessly to keep constant pressure on the Blennerville defence. Steven Conway, in the 14 ‘slot’, was a handful for the Naomh Pádraig defence throughout the encounter. He scored 1-2 and that included the score of the evening when he came out, won the ball on the right, turned Gooch-like and kicked over a wonderful point of which a senior player would be proud.
David Slattery fought tigerishly for every ball and expertly fed his colleagues with good passes that allowed them through for several good scores. Leon O’Connor completed the forward line and was everywhere providing ‘assists’ and scoring 0-2. A truly outstanding team effort! ‘Ní neart go cur le chéile’ seemed to be their motto! Ó DUINNÍN–CNOC ’16: The third biggest stadium in Europe might never have been built but for the foresight and the financial input of Limerick man, Frank Brazil Dineen.
He was an excellent athlete and was the fastest Irish sprinter of his time; in 1882, he ran the 100 yards in 10.02 seconds….an Irish record. However, he worked tirelessly for the GAA and became Uachtarán (1895-98) and Rúnaí (1898 agus 1901), the only person to hold the two positions. He bought the Jones’ Road Sports Ground (a fourteen acre racecourse) for £3,250 in 1908. He bought the ground in trust for the GAA as the organisation couldn’t afford to purchase it. Dineen held the ground in trust until 1913 when the organisation was able to buy it from him.
(In 1910 he experienced his own financial difficulties and had to sell four acres of the land to the Jesuits of Belvedere College). From 1908 to 1913, Frank oversaw the developments of the ground and paid for renovations and for the upkeep of the property. Dineen remained involved in the development of Croke Park until his death in 1916, the week before The Rising. Hill 16 was renamed ‘Dineen Hill 16’ in his honour.
During his lifetime, Kerry played in 10 All-Irelands, losing 4 in football (1893, ’05, ’10, ’15) and winning 1 in hurling (1891 – our first All-Ireland victory) and 5 in football (’03, ’04, ’09, ’13, ’14). His own county of Limerick played in 4 All-Irelands, winning 2 in football (1887, 1896), winning 1 in hurling (1897) and losing 1 in hurling (1910).
