PEIL FAOI 13: (i) The first round of the County League, DIVISION 2 (An Fhoireann Dhubh), was played on Sunday last (27th) v Firies in Farranfore. Unfortunately for Team Black, due to illness and other commitments, a few regular players were missing. This gave mentors the opportunity to try players in various positions and to give more game time to others. The game’s early exchanges were dominated by the Firies boys who built up a good lead and they were ahead at halftime….4-5 to 1-5. Despite The Rock boys’ best efforts, the opposition continued to dominate proceedings as the second-half progressed.

However, on a positive note, our boys stuck with the contest and kept plugging away! They did really well to match Firies on the point scoring but another Firies goal meant that the boys in blue were ahead at the final toot of the referee’s whistle….5-10 to 1-10. Buann cúil cluichí!

Considering that The Rock lads didn’t have full pitch outdoor training up to now, due to the unavailability of fields, there are some encouraging signs within this young team….good days are not far off! Boys, full attendance is required at training this week, on Tuesday and on Thursday, in Connolly Park.

Upcoming Division 2 fixtures: Round 2 on Sunday 3rd April (next Sunday) ag 7pm i bPáirc Uí Chonghaile v An Ghaeltacht A. Round 3 on 10th April at 7pm i bPáirc Uí Chonghaile v Na Gaeil A. Round 4 on 24th April at 7pm…AdeS (away) v Milltown/Castlemaine A. Round 5 on Sunday 8th May ag 7pm i bPáirc Uí Chonghaile v Ballymac A. (ii) The first round of the County League DIVISION 10 (An Fhoireann Ómrach)….Firies B: 3-7; Team Amber (AdeS): 1-8. Team Amber’s opening County League game was played in the Firies GAA Ground on Sunday evening (27th) last. Great credit is due to both teams for putting in excellent performances on the large expanse of Páirc Éamoinn in Farranfore in glorious warm sunshine.

Ultimately, a very skilful well-drilled Firies team came out on top in an enthralling contest. Seán McCannon had another solid game in goal with some fine saves and very smart distribution from his kick-outs. Oisín Cotter, Diarmuid Hennessey and Conor Murphy were rock solid in the full-back line and they had a mighty tussle with the sharpshooters of Firies. Killian Coffey, Liam Swords and David Ahern excelled in their defensive duties and were the launchpad for many a Rock attack. Tadhg Somers and Oran O’Donoghue worked tirelessly in midfield and covered oceans of ground on the large pitch.

The half forwards, Mark Foley, Luke O’Connor, Joe O’Halloran and Gearóid Corcoran, were willing sweepers who greatly relieved the pressure on their hard-pressed defence and linked up expertly with their inside forwards, Séamus Keenan, Jayden O’Dowd and Elliot Calleja. Our brave boys kept their heads up right to the final whistle and they can be rightly proud of their determined efforts in fighting for the Black’n’Amber.

They have learned from Sunday’s encounter and, this week, they are working assiduously to build on and to improve various aspects of their game agus iad ag ullmhú le haghaidh cuairt bhuachaillí na Gaeltachta go Connolly Park on Sunday next (3rd). Thanks to the Firies team and mentors for a fine 15-a-side game and ‘well done’ to the referee for his overall handling of the match. Team Amber: Seán McCannon, Diarmuid Hennessy, Oisín Cotter, Conor Murphy, Killian Coffey, Liam Swords, David Ahern, Oran O’Donoghue, Tadhg Somers (captain), Mark Foley, Luke O’Connor, Joe O’Halloran, Séamus Keenan, Jayden Foley, Eliot Calleja, Gearóid Corcoran.

FIRST YEAR FIXTURES: Rockie wunderkinds Gavin Ó Cathasaigh and Ruairí Ó Loinsigh were on familiar soil at Cathair Sáilí as the mighty Gaelcholáiste U15 side battled Mainistir na Féile on Tuesday (22ú). The conditions couldn’t have been better – these young maestros were surely grateful for a blazing grian at their backs and hard soil underfoot as the match kicked off. Ó Cathasaigh sailed a beauty thar an dtrasnán during the action, and soon after was celebrating a well-timed goal with his teammates. Goalkeeper Iarla Ó hAiniféin was still kept on his toes by the Mainistir Na Féile attack however- both teams shone in a tense but skilful demonstration of peil. Gaelcholáiste managed to see the threat out however agus séideadh an fheadóg deiridh  with a scoreline of 4-17 to 3-3 breactha síos in the ref’s notepad. These Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí giants are showing massive potential and producing some beautiful displays such as the above. They now progress to the next stage of Corn Aodháin Uí Chonchúir with hope that they can continue this fine run of form. (Comhfhreagraí GCC, Dáithí Ó Loinsigh).
