GAELCHOLÁISTE: Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí’s U15 season came to a close with a climactic finish to a thrilling encounter at Páirc Aibhstín de Staic Dé Máirt seo caite. The gaiscígh were like livewires throughout the preceding days, energetic in their anticipation of the final of Corn Aodháin Uí Chonchúir against their mighty rivals Scoil Chuimsitheach Thairbeart. The tension was palpable as an bheirt Charraigíneach, Gavin Ó Cathasaigh agus Ruairí Ó Loinsigh, reviewed tactics prior to throw-in. Gaelcholáiste seized an early lead from the off and attempted to keep the attacking pressure on the Scoil Chuimsitheach boys who responded in turn with a flurry of points. Indeed, the North Kerry side found a new level of teamwork during the craobh, to the frustration of the ever-excellent Gaelcholáiste panel. As time began to run out our forwards in particular worked tirelessly to spur a comeback. All 15 laochra responded well to these efforts but unfortunately the full-time whistle blew just as they were scoring consistently. This tuairisceoir, and indeed all who have enjoyed previous ties featuring the faoi 15s, sincerely hope that no member of this incredible squad is disappointed with the 3-9 to 1-10 scoreline: 2nd and 3rd year supporters interviewed upon leaving the stadium claimed that very little went wrong on the tactical front and that gaiscígh GCC held out until the very end. Their exploits have been an ardú meanman for the GCC community throughout the year and their determination and their effortless balance of study and training, is to be greatly admired. Maith sibh uilig – we look forward to yet more masterful football next season and to reclaiming, with our relentless talent, that treasured Corn Aodháin Uí Chonchúir. (Daithí Ó Loinsigh) ‘Well done’ to Daithí who recently took the top award in ‘The Pitch – the Publicjobs.ieSchools Advertising Challenge’ AND who has taken the once-in-a-lifetime (?) opportunity to interview An Taoiseach, Mícheál Martin. Cuireadh fáilte Uí Cheallaigh roimh Dhaithí chuig oifig Mhíchíl Uí Mháirtín, Taoiseach. Surely, a first for The Rock!

(ii) Senior Scór will take place after the summer. (iii) 443 clubs took part in Scór na nÓg….a lot of GAA people in that number!

‘RAIBH ‘FHIOS AGAT? August 4th 1918, over 104 years ago, was a most remarkable and significant day in the history of our association. It will always be remembered as ‘Gaelic Sunday’ or ‘Domhnach na gCluichí Gaelacha’….the day on which the GAA peacefully stood against the British Empire….and won! ‘Gaelic Sunday’ was the day on which the Association’s clubs staged peaceful protests against the requirement that their games could be allowed only with an ‘official permit.’ British Authorities attempted a crackdown on GAA activities by insisting that no matches could not take place without prior written permission being sought and granted. Of course the trouble started when the British Government tried to enforce conscription….that is forcing young Irishmen to join the British Army and to fight in WWI. The GAA objected to that idea. Our organisation objected to the ‘regulation’ and decided to defy the order by holding a match in every parish in Ireland at precisely the same time….3pm on Sunday 4th August. An estimated 54,000 players participated in games…..a game in every parish….with over 100,000 spectators watching across the entire island. Bheadh sé deacair na cluichí sin a stopadh! The GAA plan ran entirely without major incident and forced the abandonment of the requirement to seek a license to play a GAA match. Lá maith oibre!
